Donna's Cakes in West Roxbury

Anyone used Donna's in West Roxbury for their cakes?

It's my caterer's preferred vendor and I was super jazzed about it because they get fabulous reviews pretty much everywhere.

We had a bridal show with our caterer the other day and Donna's was there, and they had samples of their cake (gold and chocolate).  I didn't think much of the chocolate but usually don't but I thought the gold cake was really good, although I didn't care for the frosting as much.  The cake also didn't have filling it was just the regular cake part.

Apparently my oldest sister didn't like the cake at all.  I don't think my mom tried it but she was not happy when she found out that they don't have white cake.  Apparently they only have gold, chocolate and carrot cake.  Now my mom's saying we'll go someplace else for a cake, and she'll pay for it and my oldest sister said the same.  My other sister says that I should check out other places because I don't want people saying it's bad.

The thing is we have a package that includes the cake, and we have to pay an extra $1.50 per person if we use an outside cake and we'd have to work something out with the caterer regarding the package.

Did anyone use Donna's?  Did you like them?  What flavor cake did you have?  Did it go over well with your guests?  Even though pretty much everyone in my family is Debbie Downer on this now and it's really getting me down I'm planning on having a tasting to see how it is.

We used Donna's because we got a deal through our caterer, Fasano's in Braintree.  H and I loved the cake- I was a little surprised they only had chocolate and yellow cake with no filling, but I always prefer a simpler cake that tastes delicious over fancy wedding cake that's dry or heavy.

We got half and half, and I thought the frosting was delicious.  Our guests seemed to like it, too- we had a crowd of relatives in my parent's hotel room later that night for the leftovers.  I was very happy with the end result, but I also didn't care much about the cake other than it tasting good.

If you decide to go with another baker, see if you can negotiate the fee with your caterer.

We are also using Fasano's and we're doing their package.  I really liked the cake.  I'm finding I'm having a hard time hearing my mother and sisters' voices too much in my head.  I'm just nervous that I'm crazy and everyone's going to hate it.  I'm pretty sure my mom didn't try it and that it's just over the cake being yellow and not white.

Did you get married at Pembroke?  We're getting married there in the Augusta Ballroom.  It's so beautiful there.

If you and your FI both like the cake, I would go for it. I loved the cake because it was so moist and simple; it reminded me of the cakes my mother makes.  I didn't hear any complaints, but I'm sure some of my guests would have preferred something fancier.  But you'll never find a cake that every one of your guests likes.

Yes, we got married in the Augusta Ballroom, too.  When is your wedding?  Our only complaint about the whole day was that it was too hot in the ballroom and the bridal suite- the air conditioner could not handle the 90 degree heat and bright sun.  I hope you don't have that problem.  Otherwise, Fasano's and Pembroke did a fantastic job.
