Married Knotties - Passport Question

For anyone who has changed their name on their passports, do you get a new expiration date or is it the same as your old passport?

I ask because my passport expires in 2012.  I already legally changed my name with SS and RMV.  I planned to change my passport as well now, thinking I would get a new exp. date 10 years in the future, but someone just told me they think it stays the same, so I would have to renew (and pay) again in 2012.  If that is the case, I will just travel on my maiden name for the next 2 years.

If anyone knows, I appreciate the info!

I had to pull out my passport just now to check the expiration dates.

    Old passport:
    Issued 12 / 2002
    Expires: 12 / 2012

    New passport
    Issued: 10 / 2009
    Expires: 10/2019

So it looks like the new expiration date is 10 years from the time you renew. You could keep your maiden name passport to maximize the full 10 years. I lost a couple years myself, but oh well. One less thing to worry about in 2012. Ha, if the world goes according to the movie (2012), the passport will definitely be the last thing on my mind.

I'm pretty sure international flights now require you to present a passport and driver's license at check-in.  Your name must be the exact same on both IDs.  I don't see how this protects us against jihadists, but this appears to be a very strict rule.  Since you've already changed your name with the RMV, you should apply for a new passport now rather than later.

I did a quick google and this TSA site doesn't mention any new requirements:

    http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/screening/index.shtm

But I did recently read about it in a news article....so I'm not sure when (or if) this new rule is in effect.

When you change your name on your passport, you're basically getting an entirely new passport, so you'll get a new date (like PP mentioned).

LOL at how 2 IDs will stop people from having explosives in their undies!

Good to know about the expiration dates. I'm using my maiden name, obviously, for our HM on the tickets since there's no way to magically change my name in 24 hours before we leave (boo that!). But we're going to Greece in July and I have to have everything changed by then because my ticket for that has my married name on it. Yikes!

Thanks so much for the info!  I meant to get back on here earlier, but of course work got in the way.

I'll go and change the passport then.  We'll be in Europe im July, so it will just be easier to have everything on the one name.  Though I do still have both licenses, old and new name.  I thought they would take it or put a hole in it, or something, but no.  So I still carry and use both.
