NWR: Newport?

Is Newport more of a summer destination if you wanted to get away for a few days? Or is it still a slightly happening place in the off-season?

FI & I usually take a few days off and go up to Portland Maine in November, but this year I thought we could do something different and try Newport. The Forty 1 North hotel looks pretty snazzy and it's dog friendly which is a plus for us. When I mentioned this to him he said he thought Newport was more summery and atleast in Portland we can go up to the outlets in Freeport.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Things to do? TIA!

    I lived in Newport for four years when I was going to college up there.  There is DEFINITELY stuff to do there in the winter, although it is a lot busier in the summer!  The mansions on Bellevue Avenue are decorated for Christmas, and are so pretty.  Bundle up really well and take a walk on the Cliff Walk (I would stop when you get to Marble House, because any further and you'll be scaling rocks and if it's snowy it wouldn't be safe).  There are TONS of bars and restaurants downtown to see.  If you like ice skating, they have an outdoor ice rink that is open during the week.

    Newport is one of my favorite towns in the world...I know you'll love it.

    We love Newport so much we decided to get married there!  We do usually go for weekends in the summer but we have gone a couple of time in the winter and it is tons of fun.  We also have a dog and have stayed at the Viking and usually at the Hyatt - they are both dog friendly.  I have not stayed at 41 North but would love to in the future.  One of the good things though about staying at the Viking in the winter is that they have an indoor hot tub which you can make use of when it is cold out!

    Thanks for all the info! I e-mailed Forty 1 North about their pet policy and it's $150 -- yowza. It would be cheaper to board my dog for 3 days, and he'd probably have more fun! The Viking looks awesome (and they only charge $75 for pets saweeet).

    The Viking only allows dogs in certain rooms so just be mindful of that.  The Hyatt and the Viking claim to charge a pet fee but we have never paid one and we have brought our dog to each hotel several times.  Our dog is only 5lbs though so probably goes unnoticed most of the time!
