another name change question...

I wanted to keep both my middle and maiden name as my legal name, but to add the new last name (of my fiancee) as a fourth and final name.  I do not want to do any hyphens...just have my middle name be two names made up of my middle and maiden names after I marry...anyhow I completed the marriage lic.  application and it only asked my intended surname for after I marry...which I repled would be my fiancee's last name.

Now I am told by a friend I liklely messed this up and now cannot incorporate my maiden name legally unless I go to court.  Any idea on how to fix??  have I lost my last name temporarily for good??  My marriage lic. is already done and at the town hall to be picked up.  But they are closed today!

What you did at the office is correct--your marriage license only has the ability to change your last name.  If you wish to take your maiden name as part of your middle name (along with your original middle name) you will need to tell everyone (SS, RMV, Insurance) when you are making the changes for your last name.   Your marriage license has nothing to do with it.

Like Galazy said, you can only change your last name on the marriage license. To change your middle name you need to go to court.

I did exactly what you are describing. It's a little bit more hassel but not really. I filled out the marriage license like you did, then at SSA told them I wanted First Middle Maiden Newlast. It took a little longer for her to fill out the card properly, since I think it's just longer than usual, but it went through no problem, no court required, no extra fees.

My recommendation is to decide exactly how you want your name printed though-- just 1 middle initial or 2? I had them do my drivers license as First MM Last, so two middle initials, and I wish I just did the one. My credit cards just have my middle initial, not my maiden name initial. I think I made things harder for myself.

I did exactly this --- didn't have a problem having my name First Middle Maiden NewLast but on my license I only have First Maiden NewLast... two middle names seemed confusing on paperwork but officially I have two middle names.

It's funny-- it's such a small thing, and really, you are going to be the only one who even knows you kept your name in there, but somehow it made such a big difference for me! I always wanted to change my name, but I just couldn't quite part with my maiden name. But my middle name is also a family name, so... an obnoxious 4 name name :)
