Wedding band engraving?

We just got FI's wedding band today (wooohoooo)!!! 

How many characters were you able to engrave in your FI's/H's wedding band?  I wanted to do a phrase and the date which would total 17 characters, but the person I spoke with today told me to only do our initials and the date....I'm trying to see if we should just go elsewhere or if that's pretty standard.

    Here's what we did in ours:

    FI's: SLT to SNS 1-16-10
    Mine: SNS to SLT 1-16-10

    We just got the date in ours 05/30.2009.  Nothing more would have fit in mine but MH's would have fit plenty more.  The jeweler did not give us any restrictions.

    We each got our 1st dance song "I'll stay with you".  My ring is really small, and it fit.  It's in cursive script.

    Thanks ladies.  I can understand having a cut off on my ring but not FI's.  Can I ask where you got your engraving done?  I assume at the jeweler you got the ring at, I'm hoping if I call them they would do just the engraving.  Thanks!

    Husband's ring is 20 characters (24 with spaces) - we got it engraved from the place we got it (titaniumera)

    Mine was more of a squeeze at 16 characters including spaces.

    He has "le gra go deo" inside his band (gaelic for "with love forever") - we got it done at Hannoush in Natick, they were the only ones who could engrave tungsten - no restrictions on length. My band is a shared prong eternity - so no engraving unfortunately.
