Wedding cakes in Central MA?

Hi ladies!

I hope all your planning is going well! I am in the process of looking for bakeries in the Worcester area for my wedding cake and was wondering if any of you have had good or bad experiences or recommendations for certain places.

Also, what seems to be the going rate per slice for a cake? I'll have about 100 guests and I'm looking for something simple, not super extravagant with a lot of extras. Two places I've looked at either start at $6.00/slice or it's a minimum of $500 to get started on one. I'd love to not spend $6.00/slice (maybe $3 or $4) but I'm not sure if that is a possibility.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Diane Rockwell's cakes, from Lancaster, are great. Aunty Ellen's in Leominster are too. Good luck!

edit: To add, I've had both of theirs at other functions/weddings. I also worked weddings for several years as a waitress. Extra, already cut slices were sometimes up for grabs for the staff: I found many I wouldn't bother eating, even when hungry after a long shift. The two above always tasted good.

We used Speciality Cakes by Heather Laplante in Mendon (she was voted Knots best in 2010,2011,12). It's out of her house but she does an amazing job! Cakes are moist and so good! We actually ate our anniversary layer almost 2 years later because I was pregnant during our one year. It was peanut butter and chocolate (it was still really good!). My cake is on her website it's blue and ivory with ribbons and one flower, the middle layer is larger than the top and bottom. She was very affordable about the $4 range I think pp. I tried Konditor Meister also and her's was so much better! We had the wedding white with raspberry and chocolate with vanilla buttercream for the other layers which was under $4 according to her site.
We got married at Harrington Farm btw and she delivered it there so that is definitely central MA.

  • We're using The Bean Counter (one location in Worcester and another in Shrewsbury). They're super-nice to work with and their cakes are fantastic! It wouldn't hurt to go for a tasting.

  • I second Specialty Wedding cakes.  At our consultation she took the time to work with us to create our cake.  Her cakes are not only beautiful, but delicious.  I believe she is about $4/slice.  Our flavors were Dulce de Leche and Apple Cider Spice (October wedding).

She also suggested using sugar crystals, but after seeing them called us to tell us they were not good quality and asked if we wanted to use flowers to bring in some color instead.  We had a cake topper and once she saw it, agreed that we did not need to add anything else to our cake.

Everyone at my wedding loved the cake and some guests helped themselves to a second slice.  I am looking forward to enjoying our anniversary cake.

You cannot go wrong with Heather of Specialty Wedding Cakes.
