Invitation etiquette

Hi all-

We are having a catholic ceremony and therefore inviting our priest to the reception for the prayer.  Is it customary to send a formal invite to him as we do our other guests or is that something that we ask verbally, etc?
Same with rehearsal dinner.

I sent our officiants an invitation to the wedding in the mail just like the other guests. However, they declined to come as they are doing more than one wedding that day. I would send both of the invitations to your priest in the mail. It's a nice touch.

I would send a formal invitation, however, unless they are family friends or personally connected to you be prepared for him to decline. Most priests that I have spoken with made it a point to say they do not attend the reception.

I'm doing it.  I think it's a nice thing to do.  He will probably decline, but it's a nice gesture to let him know that the thought was there.

I just assumed he would attend.  I didn't realize that many declined.  Good to know.

We plan to send a formal invite to our minister. After meeting with him last night, he said he would attend our reception, give a prayer before dinner, but leave when the dancing starts.
