Name Change Process

Hi All, I am sure this is asked a ton of times before, and I searched but didn't find anything.

I was married this past weekend. I recieved the marriage certificate that the priest signs the next day in Church. What is the next step. I recieve something in the mail next, and take that to the SS office??

Thanks-- asking the fellow MA knotties to make sure I do things right

You should just be able to take the marriage certificate that you have to the SS office. Then head to the DMV.

I'm not sure if SS would accept your church certificate or if you have to wait for your official certificate from the clerks office where applied for your marriage license.

You will need the official marriage certificate from the town clerk's office where it was filed (you'll have to pick it up in person -- it doesn't get mailed to you). Your priest should have signed it and mailed it in to the clerk's office after your ceremony.

Once you have that you have to first change your name at the SS office then you can go to the DMV for a new license, bank accounts, bills etc

Don't forget that you'll eventually need a new passport with your new name too -- I forgot that one and I had to put a rush on mine :(

It depends on how long your officiant takes it sending it back to the Clerks Office.  I work in a clerks office and I got two certificates back today from this past weekend.  It never hurts to give them a call, it could be in.
