MA Tax on Vendors???

Hi!!! I'm just starting to plan my wedding!!!  I'm considering reception venues in MA and NH and was wondering if anyone knew if you have to pay MA tax for things other than the reception like the photographer, DJ, cake, etc. if the reception is in MA?  Thanks!!!

In MA you'll have to pay tax on the cake, if it's not included with your venue.  I know there is tax on flowers too.  DJ no.  HTH!

I know it is a yes for cake and flowers.  I think there is a tax on the food portion of the reception (the meal tax) but not 100% sure.  We have our reception in NH and are using mostly NH vendors simply for that purpose.  NH does have a meal tax too though.

The MA tax is sales tax, which means you pay it on things that you purchase, not services.  So things like flowers, cake, food you pay it on.  But services like photographer, videographer, DJ you don't.  However, my photographer is from NH and she said if she ships us our photo album, technically she is supposed to charge tax on it (since she sold it to MA).  But if we pick it up in NH, no tax.  Sweet!

You have to pay tax on any THING that you purchase in MA.  Unfortunatly, things that are altered, you also have to pay tax on.  Like if you buy wedding invitations that are printed, you have to pay tax on their service to print as well as everything else (envelopes, paper, etc).

In MA, photographers are required to remit sales tax.  Also, a room rental is subject to tax.

Photographers tax is on the product you are getting not the service they are providing. Make sure that you have them slip it out so you don't get charged tax on the full amount. Ex: if in your photographer charges $3,000 but you get is a photos or a album included in that amount....the only things that are taxable is the actual pictures and album so make sure they let you know how much there time costs so they don't tax you on it.
