  • Episiotomies used to be routine. There is a big debate about them right now. Doctors against it say that tissue that tears along natural fascial lines heals faster and less painfully. Also, 3rd and 4th degree tears happen more frequently with episiotomies. Doctors for it say that a clean line is easier to stitch and therefore makes it better looking. It also makes delivery faster = covering your ass for lawsuits.

    While I still cringe thinking of someone taking scissors to my vag, there are procedures far worse during childbirth.

    Makes it BETTER looking? How often do you even see the scar for that?!

    Please do not tell the far worse ones.
  • Meh, episiotomy, schmepisiotomy. It happens, or you tear, or you really stretch. Childbirth, whether by c-section or otherwise, is NOT for wimps. Thanks for the update. And if you don't want to read details, don't click on the post. A-duuurrrrrrr.

    Come on, Nebb. You know you're gonna put pics of your vajayjay out there after child birth. You know you want to.
  • Well considering I remember a debate on here many moons ago about women wanting unncessary c-sections to make their vaginas look better, it seems many women care about that.

  • People get vaginoplasty or whatever to pretty vaginas up.  So random and weird.

    I know they have vaginal rejuvenations to tighten it up and stuff.  I can kind of see why someone would do that.  Or I guess you might want it to look pretty if you work in porn or something.
  • And when I said "you," I didn't mean any of you guys.  Unless you work in porn.  Then I did mean you.

  • Who doesn't want a shiny, sparkly brand new vagina for when their partner goes down??? Who knows. It might even smile back!

    ::nods head::

    A friend's mom had an episiotomy without an epidural, because the baby came so fast she didn't have time to get one. She said the epidural pain was worse than the labor pains.

    ::shudder::

  •  2 cm actually isn't very much dilation. A lot of times hospitals won't admit you unless you have 4 cm dilation.

    I think her water broke, though? Which is probably why she's admitted. If the labor doesn't progress soon they'll probably have to help her along with drugs b/c they don't like to keep the babies up there fluid-free for very long.

    I just want one because I want it to be over fast.
    Lots of people opt for c-sections nowadays. My mom assists with them all the time.

  • Oh yay!!!

    2cm/90% basically means she's on her way, but each woman progresses at a different rate. She could have this baby in the next two hours or the next 20 hours, totally depends on her body.

    Episiotomies aren't mandatory at all, and there are all sorts of really easy preventive measures a woman can take to reduce her chances of needing one or tearing.

  • With those numbers Tide may be there a while!  I hope she's not though.

  • Salt, I used to feel the same way, and then my mom told me about her csections, and I started asking around more. What I learned is labor isn't exactly fun, but it's a day or two max and you're done. Your lady parts bounce back super quick apparently. A csection is going to lay you out for weeks, the recovery is painful, and you might be doomed to csections forever because you did the first one that way (although that's beginning to change).

  • my poor sister had 4th degree tear. She had an unbelievable amount of stitches and had to sit on a ring for a month. She also had to take drugs in order not to have a solid poop for a really long time.

    Her second kid they cut her because she did not heal well from the first child.

      In St Thomas you either go med-free or c-section.  There is no one to give Epidurals at the hospital.

    Sorry Nebb, my sarcasm was aimed at posters ::coughjessjocough:: who whined about not wanting to know icky details.

    Let it be noted that I haven't added any painful details about my second daughter's birth, the 9 lb 7 oz behemoth, with no epidural. I have spared you all that.

    That's a risk I'm willing to take. :) I've seen it go both ways. Both my FSILs had c-sections this year. One of them bounced back right away and the other one had a much harder time, but I think hers had some complications.

    Either way, we only plan on having one child, so I won't have to worry about it again.

    Sadly it's the only 'medical' procedure I trust them on.  Everything else I say "When in pain get on a plane".

    WTH? That's insane. What do they do for csections, just knock you out completely? Typically you're given an epidural or spinal block for c/s so the mom can stay awake.

  • lpstl - I have no idea.  I do not know anyone here who had a c-section to ask.

  • Well salt, I hope you have an easy one then! My mom had 3, I'll spare you the details, but a couple stories from her would change anyone's mind. She's pretty much scared the bajeebus out of me as far as c/s go.

  • it might be that the anesthesiologist will only work on c-sections but is not on call for vaginal births.  With the island being so small there are not a lot to choose from.

    It took a pregnant friend of mine 4 months to get a OB doctor because no one was taking new patients.

  • She probably has a long way to go.

    My cousin was induced on a Monday and was frustrated that she still hadn't delivered by Wednesday.  Yeah, you can't plan that stuff.

    My mom is an L&D nurse, so she gives me the inside info.

    Once Tide starts going, it'll get quicker.  It's slower at the beginning, but as someone else said, you can be dilated and still at home for awhile.
