Dog people, please help!

So we have a 3 year old golden retriever and in the last 7 days she has peed on the bed - twice. Fortunately we have a mattress pad so the mattress has survived all of this, but it is SUPER annoying.

She's not sick, we haven't changed her food and there's nothing new in our lives that would cause her stress.

Has your dog ever gone through a phase like this and if so how did you combat it? Any other advice?

have your ruled out a UTI?

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Have you taken your dog to the vet? Is it cold where you live?
  • I would take her to your vet for a urinalysis and such. Dogs are great at hiding illness so even if she looks perfectly healthy to you, she could have something else going on.

  • Ive always had goldens and haven't experienced this.
Ditto Lynda, a UTI may be to blame.

  • My dog peed on the couch last week which he has NEVER ever done.  I blamed it on the fact it had just gotten really hot outside and he drank lots of water at the dog park.  However when one of my dogs acts out like that it's usually because they're not getting enough attention when we've had a busy week or something.
  • I work in animal rescue, dogs dont go through phases peeing on the bed if there isnt something new in their life. People/things/ etc.

I would take the dogs urine to get tested immediately and rule out any sort of infection there. Maybe he is drinking more water and needs to pee through out the night and isnt being let out?

IF your dog is drinking more water and is needing to urinate more they need to be checked out immediately. When pets start getting thirstier than normal its a symptom for a lot of things! Im not trying to scare you im just an animal lover.

Watch the water and watch the dogs behavior whenever your home. See if they are doing anything out of the ordinary.  I hope it is okay!
  • Thanks Ladies.

It is warmer then normal here, it's been about 25 Celcius for the past couple of days when it's normally 5 at this time of year and she's drinking more but not that much.

I think we're giving her as much attention as we normally do but I think she might be going into heat soon, so that could explain it. I'll have her urine tested though.

Shes not fixed....that might explain a lot of things also!!! Is it a puppy ? Have you considered getting her fixed yet?
  • Our dog had an accident this week, too, and it was just from the extra water she's been drinking due to the heat.  We were already planning on taking her to the vet for her allergies, and he did a full rundown and found nothing wrong.
We started taking her out to the bathroom one extra time in the evening, and haven't had any problems since.

  • Lemon is 3 and we're considering breeding her, so that's why we haven't gotten her fixed yet. We're going to make a final decision before her next heat cycle and will have her spayed if we decide not to breed her.

  • I personally think anyone who wants to breed their dog should have to spend a day at the local animal control assisting in the euthanizations that they are forced to do due to overcrowding of homeless animals.
    Just my opinion.

<div>Please, please do not breed unless you are aware of what you are getting into. Have you done full health tests on your dog (heart monitoring, full screenings). Does she come from a champion background? Have you shown her? Researched studs?</div><div>

  • Please get her fixed! There are so many homeless animals out there! It is so sad!
  • Achi, do you know if this happened while she was asleep on the bed or was a deliberate act?

  • Kelly, I think you and I got dropped here.

For the love of God, please spay her.

Could be a UTI, bladder stones, tumor, etc.. She is young, but she might have permanent  incontinence issues. My huskie had that issue, however she started at around 7 or 8 (Rescue so age is a guess). We put her on medication, but it was an issue from time to time.

But mainly visit the vet ASAP. Any  issue like this should warrant a call to the vet first and then once medical issues are ruled out you can assume it is behavioral.

Please don't breed her. There is ZERO reason to intentionally add more dogs on this earth.

  • I was wondering the same thing Girlie. If we aren't paying attention to one of our dogs signals that she needs to go out she will come and pee in front of us. It's a bitch move but it gets the point across. If your dog has been drinking extra water but you haven't changed her going out routine she may have needed to be let out.

I'm not sure, I was still at work when it happened and FI is out. <div>

I volunteer at a humane society so I know how many homeless pets are out there. It's FI that wants to possibly breed her and she's really his dog. He's had her since she was puppy, before we knew each other.</div>

  • Achi, either way I'd take her to the vet.  Could be an infection, could be incontinence (I went through that with my 2 year old Dobie - easily taken care of with daily meds) or it could be behavioral.  Better to be safe than sorry.

I had the exact thing happen to me, my FI has his bulldog for 5 years before we met and he never neutered him. And like your FI, he said he was considering breeding the dog. If you're having trouble convincing him to spay try talking to the vet about the health risks of not spaying. I know my FI takes it more seriously since the vet told him Brutus is at a much higher risk of cancer because he is not neutered.</div>

<div>I'm working on it. I'm pretty sure that FI will see the light and I've told him many times that it's better for her to be spayed if she's not going to have puppies. I've called and left a message for the vet to book an appointment, I'll bring up the spaying thing with the vet there. </div><div>

I've heard there's a second universe out there. I've been out of the talking/posting loop since the beginning of January (the hospital stay, recovery, therapy, rest, etc), and now that I'm not working, I try to only get online a couple of times a day.

I could pull it up on my Fire, but I couldn't type in a text box.

  • It could be she is feeling the stress of the wedding.  Maybe she is feeling ignored, or jealous of the woman in her daddy's life?  I have an 11 year old Cocker Spaniel, and he will do things like pee or poop in the house if there has been a lot of stress in the house, such as someone is in the hospital, we get a lot of company, etc.  Animals have such acute senses to things we may not think are affecting them.
If all is well at the vet, then this may be the cause.

  • Glad you're going to the vet achi. It could be from any number of things. Ozzie peed on our furniture when he had a bad UTI. We couldn't tell he was sick besides the peeing. My friend's dog also pees accidentally because of an estrogen problem. They basically had to put her on doggie birth control or something like that (it's an estrogen pill) to help with it. Either way, I hope your pup feels better soon!
