Nook/Kindle/iPad PSA

After dealing with pain and tingling in my hands and forearms, I finally went to the doctor.  He told me my ulnar nerve is damaged, and I have to go through eight weeks of physical therapy.

I met the therapist for the first time today.  After asking tons of questions about my symptons, he said, "Do you own a Nook, Kindle or iPad?  If so, do you use it often?"

Apparently, in the last year or so, my type of injury has become very common.  People are using these devices, which is fine, but they aren't moving around or stretching as often as they should.  Holding something with your elbows bent in a 90 degree angle for more than about ten minutes can put pressure on the nerve and also cause tendonitis.

So, I know lots of ladies on here have e-readers, and I would just like to encourage you to take frequent breaks while reading.  Stretch a bit.  Otherwise, you may be in for a world of pain (and a giant medical bill).

  • Interesting.  I never would have thought about that.

  • Wouldn't this be the same for just reading a book in general? Just curious what the difference is!
  • That's funny because when I first got my BB, my right hand, especially my thumb and joint, started really bothering me. It was to the point where I had to change the way I held a pen. I realized that it was because I was so used to texting with only my right hand and was putting too much stress on my thumb.

I then started texting with both hands and now the problem is gone. My hair stylist called it BlackBerry thumb.

I'm getting my mom a Kindle for Mother's Day. I will warn her about this.

<div>When I hold a paperback, I have to move my  hands and arms more to both turn the page and be more comfortable.  My Nook is so lightweight, and turning the page requires only a light tap with my thumb, so I don't make those small movements as often.</div><div>
</div><div>At least, that's what the physical therapist told me.</div>

<div>That makes sense. I'll definitely think about moving around a little more next time I use my Nook! Thanks!</div>
  • Thanks, I use my Kindle all the time so this is something to think about!
  • This is interesting because I have started having tingly sensations in my hands in the past month or two. I'll have to see if it's during the same time that I'm obsessing over a book.
  • I think you can have the same kind of damage when you keep your hands fairly stationary at a keyboard and mouse.  I have an office job and started having those tingly sensations, so I googled it, and now I try to stretch my arms out more frequently and put something under my elbow so it's not resting for a long time on the desk.  Seems to have helped.

My Dad's doctor told him he had this several years ago. We gave him a good deal of hell about it.  And it was fun.
