Wedding Venue vs Wedding Colors

We are getting married in a medieval castle in Scotland - in April. While I realize that most spring/summer colors are light and bright - the castle has a royal/dark feel about it. Most of the castle is done in the royal colors that match winter/fall weddings and not summer/spring- navy, burgundy, hunter green, etc. So should my wedding colors match the season or the venue? When the venue and season colors clash. Thanks for any advice and input,-Cass

Re: Wedding Venue vs Wedding Colors

  • Season and venue do not matter what colors do you and fi like? I would default to royal colors for a castle wedding
  • I would do whatever colors you like best.  If they are darker colors, the bright spring/summer colors might really look cool.  They'll stand out.

  • Generally I don't understand the whole matching the wedding colors with the season. You should just pick colors you like and go with it. The castle sounds amazing and while you don't have to match up your colors with the venue decor it seems like that would look really cool.
  • Quick reality check here:  what were the "colors" of the venues at the last 6 weddings you attended?  Don't know?  That's because it's really only important to brides who are planning their own weddings.Choose the color scheme you want.  No one is going to leave your wedding saying "Gee Cass, I really wanted to watch you and Mr. Cass say your vows, but I was so distracted that the bridesmaid dresses didn't coordinate with the castle.  Frankly, the whole wedding was just ruined for me."
"Trix, it's what they/our parents wanted. Why so judgemental? And why is your wedding date over a year and a half ago? And why do you not have a groom's name? And why have you posted over 12,000 posts? And why do you always say mean things to brides?" palegirl146
  • Honestly, you should pick the wedding colors that you want. It doesn't matter what the season is, although I can see wanting to "match" the feel of the venue. I would go with jewel tones, even though it's April. Maybe just use seasonal flowers in a muted palette of creams to complement the colors. Also, I'm jealous tht you're getting married in a castle. Does the castle have a website?
  • Your colors can be whatever the heck you want.  Personally, I think the combination of the royal colors of the venue with spring colors for the wedding would look neat.

I know that some brides stress over colors (I was one), but what matters is that you choose colors that both you and your FI like. And seasons shouldn't dictate a color scheme. If you can't decide, maybe consider jewel tones (emerald, eggplant, gold, royal blue.) What about a hunter green with yellow accents? Or a navy with pink/bright green accents?

  • Not at all shelly.  Just trying to help brides realize that they don't need to obsess about things like dresses matching walls or carpet. The wedding industry:  magazines, websites, tv shows all conspire to convince brides and grooms that unless they have <fill in the blank>, or do<fill in another blank>, their wedding won't be special, unique, memorable, wonderful, perfect, and the list goes on.Sadly, people start to believe that foolishness, and end up stressing themselves over something that doesn't need cause angst.

  • I don't think the colors need to "match" the venue, but I understand the desire, so I can see wanting to coordinate that.  So do it if you want.  Don't get hung up on "seasonal" colors.  That's silly.  Any color can be used in any season just by thinking about it the right way.  If your venue is navy, burgundy and hunter green -- those colors all look very spring/summery when combined with a crisp white.  Or use the pales of that: spring green, pink, and baby blue.  That will coordinate very nicely.
  • I think the season is completely irrelevant (says the woman who used black and white for a summer wedding and the palest pink and brown for a winter wedding). But I do think the venue should be considered IF there's something about the venue that makes certain colors a "natural." In this case, sounds like jewel tones would be beautiful at your site.
  • Actually, we vetoed four venues because of intereior color schemes.  It's not evil to want a pleasant look for you and your guests. And yes, I can tell you the decor of wedding venues I have seen that clashed with the wedding colors.I don't think that the seasons enteredinot it that much though
  • I need to see the castle first.
