Are place cards necessary? Can I have guest directed to a table and have them chose their seat?

You can do assigned tables with no assigned seats, where the guest is assigned a table but chooses their seat at that table.  You can also do open seating with nothing assigned at all.

I've been to a few weddings where there were no place cards and were just told our table.  The venue where ggmae was married does this I believe as their standard practice.

I was at a wedding once where they didn't do a seating chart, and it was a bit crazy with people finding a seat/table. Why, I don't know, because the concept is simple enough: sit anywhere you want.At ours, we assigned tables, but let them pick their seats, and this went smoothly.
