Re: More news =): Did anyone see this already?? OMG!

  • What do you mean 'what would you do'? Really, would you just stand there and watch? Honestly...
    image
  • Yes actually some people would as seen in the video for fear the SUV would explode. Not really a stupid question.

Yeah, I saw this last week. Thankfully there were two rescue workers right around the corner and they came to help out. They have been interviewed all over the news. I think it's one of those situations where you never know what you'd do until you were in the situation. I would hope that I'd help (and it would be very difficult not to), but you have to way the risks as well.

  • I can't believe how many stupid people were just standing around the car. Like you said, it could explode. Get out of the way and let the people helping do their job!
  • Those "strangers" were off duty firefighters, fyi.

J&K - They said on the news that they were around the corner getting an ice cream cake for one of their kid's birthdays. How lucky that they were in the area and could get to the scene so fast!

  • Yeah, I know, it's really awesome.  I'm originally from the area, and normally all you hear about in MKE are the people shooting each other.  So it was really awesome to hear this story.  Obviously not awesome the boy is hurt, but you know what I mean.  I posted a local paper's story on this last week, actually.

  • sorry for the repost J&K
  • Oh, haha, I don't care, that's not why I said it!  Actually, only one person responded to it when I posted it, so you're doing better than me!

  • Alixz, you obviously have never heard of the Kitty Genovese case? A woman was being attacked outside in the street and absolutely no one called 911 because they thought "somebody else would" or had already. It's honestly not uncommon at al, regardless of if you think it is right or ridiculous. It's called responsibility diffusion or the bystander effect.

  • Yes, J&K, its not the same, but the case stands and her neighbors did nothing. The reason I mentioned Kitty Genovese is because that is when bystander effects and responsibility diffusion really came into light. But, that case is no where near an "urban myth". The news did report some falsities though. =)
  • NDZ, we looked at many studies that called the KG case a "parable," "urban legend," and "gross exaggeration."  Obviously the case actually happened, KG was murdered, etc.  And yes, I'm not arguing that it was the beginning of the concept of diffusion of responsibility, that is true.  But, as you said, the media misreported MANY important things--such as the number of people that supposedly heard things, and the amount of time it took for the assault and murder to actually take place.  But, I'm really just arguing with you about this because I'm in a piiss poor mood and looking to pick a fight with someone.  So disregard me.  Perhaps I should go back to bed :)
