Save-the-date cards

I am looking for guidance on the ideal timeframe for sending out save-the-date cards. In researching about etiquette, I've read that the formal invite should be sent out 6-8 weeks prior to the wedding. We're getting married in May 2010. Any suggestions?

Re: Save-the-date cards

  • Save the dates usually go out 6-9 months before the wedding.  If you are getting married on a holiday (like Memorial Day), you can send them out up to a year in advance so people know to rearrange their usual holiday plans.

  • Do you have a lot of OOT guests who might need to make arrangements for flights or hotels?  If so, probably 6 months would be enough time.  I looked at your date and since you are not getting married on a holiday weekend, that is probably the only real reason you might need to send STDs.

  • Our wedding is also in May of 2010.  We are sending out the STDs in January, invites in March.

  • Yes, 6-9 months in advance. In your case, I would send them out no later than Thanksgiving so they don't get lost in the holiday card shuffle. You don't want to send them much earlier unless it's a holiday/destination wedding.

  • 6-12 months prior After you have the 100% no chance of deciding to exclude guest list.
  • If that link doesn't work because of the damn KnotTV Live ad, just go to the main knot page and click on Wedding Invitations.  There's a ton of info there about save the dates and invitations.
