Tipping the Caterer?

So I am looking at the estimate from my caterer and there is a 20% service charge as part of the bill.  Do I have to tip them on top of this?  If so by how much assuming that they do a good job?

Re: Tipping the Caterer?

  • Is the caterer providing waiters or some sort of service? If the caterer is only providing food and including the service charge, then I would not tip.
  • If there is a service charge then no. A lot of places will not let people accept tips if there is a service sharge.
  • They are providing 4 wait staff and a bartender for the event.
  • If the 20% is all the included in the contract, I'd just leave it at that.
  • Get clarification for exactly what the service charge is.  Our place had a 15% service charge that went to all the service people for their salaries.  The tip was on top of that.People on here will say that standard tip % applies, but our place suggested a $3-4 tip per guest, which wound up being a very low percentage of the total.  I'd ask your place what is typical and take it from there.
