  • Vally - you probably mean chocolate ganache (gnocchi is a pasta....)   We are going with not JUST buttercream but chocolate buttercream..... yummmmmmm........

  • I wish I could get buttercream:( Our bakery that we're using (and we don't have a choice because they contract with caterer) only offers fondant.

  • I blame Top Chef for my knowledge of these things. (Vegas starts tonight! Also, TCM finale! Go Hubert!)

  • I want to come to that dinner, Wading! I looked up my cake, and mine is dark chocolate buttercream icing, with chocolate mousse between the chocolate layers. And now I want cake.
  • I think it would make an awesome dessert!  With  a strawberry sauce?  Maybe a combination of strawberry and vanilla sauces?

  • Buttercream!! I highly dislike fondant, even good fondant. My mom is a baker and will be making our cake and is oh so thankful that I chose buttercream. Fondant can be a real pain in the butt, and it is not cheap.
  • I did fondant. Expense was immaterial since I made my own cake. Made my own fondant. Everybody said it was the only fondant they had ever had that actually tasted good.
  • oh moose.... i think that sounds like heaven. especially after the craptastic pizza i had last night.

  • Forgot to add, the fondant was over Italian meringue buttercream flavored with Grand Marnier and orange blossom essence. Yum!
  • It depends if you are more interested in the looks of the cake or the taste. I persoanlly think fondat is gross and I requested that no fodant be used on my cake. However fondant does look better.

  • Like some posters here, we chose fondant to be over the buttercream.  Our baker makes their own fondant in-house and she was able to customize the flavors to accent the flavors of the cake.  Worst case scenario, those that don't like the fondant can just eat around it since there's buttercream under there.
  • We chose buttercream b/c FI's aunt is making our cake and she makes delicious buttercream. We're normally not fondant fans, but my MOH had a cake made for my shower that was covered in fondant and it was pretty good (not as good as buttercream, but still pretty good). So, I think it just depends on the baker.
  • I just went to a wedding that had a cake with fondant and it was fabulous! I am a huge fan of buttercream frosting, but this fondant was very, very tasty. If you have a skilled baker, the fondant should taste just fine! Also, if you want intricate designs, fondant is the only way to go!
  • I had never tasted fondant before our cake tasting and I must say... it was simply delicious! Our baker had a new White Chocolate Fondant that was very smooth and mellow and not super sugary at all. I would ask your baker if they carry it because it truly was amazing. It did not over power the flavor of the cake at all.
  • Buttercream - it's cheaper, and it tastes way better, IMO.  I could eat buttercream frosting with a spoon given half a chance.  :-)
  • Buttercream for us! Our baker is able to smooth the buttercream so well that it looks very much like fondant. Buttercream tastes way better in my opinion.

  • Some fondant is really good! If you are having an outdoor wedding, it holds up way better than buttercream. Traditionally, you are not supposed to eat the fondant. Most caterers take it off before serving the cake to the guests.
  • ASK AROUND.  I was fortunate enough to find a baker  who didn't charge an arm & a leg for fondant and uses a white chocolate fondant.  It is absolutely delicious! We're having 200+ guests at our wedding and we're doing a smaller cake table cake (feeds 116) and we're having another cake made that will be in the back kitchen for the remaining guests.  The cake in the back will not have fondant on it so we're only paying for the 116 tiered cake on the display table.  Plus - the staff can be getting the cake pieces ready to serve while we're cutting our cake.  Then when they take our cake to be cut for service, they can already be serving the other one.

  • can i say meringue? heehe i love meringue frosting, its just egg whites beaten until fluffy then powdered sugar... it is sooo yummy! Buttercream is good too if its done right, it can be a bit too greasy.
  • Fondant has a horrible taste so I went with buttercream. They can do fancier designs with the fondat but at what cost to your guests. It boils down to taste or fancy cake decorations.
  • I think that fondant has a bad name from the old stuff. But I hav eto say that I was BLOWN away by the taste of the fondant on my cakes. Also if you want your cake to be designed real detailed they might hav eto use some fondant. We were able to do a tasting and they let us taste the fondant and like i sid it was really good. And then of course you have frosting underneathe that as well.

  • Our cake will have both. We will have a butter cream frosting and then they are laying fondant over it for the design. I don't really like buttercream or cake and neither does my fiance, but we felt the fondant and buttercream mixture will make guest happy for the taste and us happy for the look.

  • I think buttercream is much yummier, but if you really want the perfect lines of fondant, go for it.
  • We chose buttercream because of taste and cost!

  • Buttercream all the way!
  • we weren't sure about what to get either so we had our cake lady make us a small sheet cake in the flavor we wanted and do half buttercream and half fondant.  both were really good so we decided we are going to get a smaller cake than we need in fondant and a couple sheet cakes in buttercream.
