Re: Do you volunteer?

  • late againYes.I cook for a homeless shelter in the area and have for years.I'm in the  Big Sister program.  I'm between little sisters right now though. I'll get a new one next month.I support the March of Dimes and distribute material for their fund raising.  M was an extremely premature baby and this cause is probably the closest to my heart.
  • FI and I are looking into volunteering at a place called Camp Boggy Creek. It's for kids w/terminal or life changing illnesses. I would enjoy helping this cause anyway...but recently my step-brother and SIL were told that their baby girl will be born w/spina bifida. For that reason this cause hits close to home now.

  • I'm very involved at my local church.  Have you looked into micro-lending?  I give loans through Kiva.org, which is very fulfilling- it's not charity (and you can't claim it as such, since you get the money back), it's helping people help themselves.

  • I currently don't volunteer because we just moved to a new city but in my old city I taught preschool Sunday School, taught Spanish weekly to 2nd graders, and was a mentor to a junior high student. Two of my volunteer things I found out about at my college and Sunday was church associated.I think you have to find something you are gifted/passionate about and then look into what you can do. It might even just be looking up phones numbers or googling things in your area. GL!

  • oot, do you know that I applied to be a Big Sister in NYC, and got a letter back saying they didn't need Big Sisters?  I was like, huh, how about that, every little girl in NYC has a positive female role model.  Booooooooo.

  • I'm part of a member of a Ravens Roost. We have fundraising events throughout the year to benefit several charities. I also occasionally volunteer with the rescue where I got our kitten and since 2004, I've raised money yearly for the Brain Tumor Society (there is a 5k in DC each May).
