Rot in H3LL Evil DMV

OMG I just spent 2 and a half hours at the DMV trying to change my name. Standing UP in line the whole time.I get to the front of the line, I have every form: SS card, Passport, driver's license, out of state residence change - all filled out... AND, they turn me away. I have a Texas drivers license that doesn't expire til 2012. But they tell me because it doesn't have the issue date (oooh it's the OLD license) I have to get some other form from the State of Texas.I can't even find this posted on the DMV web site now that I'm going back and looking for it. They couldn't post a sign somewhere at the DMV that you can read while rotting in line.I am soooo PISSED.Tell me about your name change fun.

Re: Rot in H3LL Evil DMV

  • That really sucks and I probably would have raised Hell. The only issue I had while changing my name was with my work e-mail address. We have to login to our computers, and my new name screwed with my login for a couple weeks. The SS office and DMV were no problem for me.
  • I am absolutely dreading this part of the process.  Great.
  • I bawled a couple of people out, telling them they should post something on the front. And they said, "You're the only person who had this problem today." Yes, I'm sure I'm the only person from Texas today who had this particular problem, but why not post a list of states that need additional forms or some such. I see that kind of thing posted all the time at govt offices. One guy I bawled out was smirking and I told him to "wipe the smile off his face, it wasn't funny." Yes, I'm a cvnt when you mess with me.
  • I probably wouldn't have moved until they found the form I was missing and I filled it out there while standing in line. Assholess.
  • The DMV is ridiculous, everyone I've gone too looks like a 10 year old kid was in charge of the organization. My DMV experience wasn't that bad though, neither was social security, or my bank. My nightmare has been with my HR department. I can't change my name on my benefits, it apparently has to go through them.I didn't drop my maiden name, I moved it over to a second middle name. Now, the DMZ, social security, and bank all understood this. This is the email I got back from HR after I requested my name change.Laine – most people when they get married and want to keep their last name attach their new married name to the current married name – sometimes with a hyphen.  I am  trying to change your benefit cards and I cannot add your maiden name to your middle name- only the last name.  Is this OK? Do you want it with a hyphen?WTF woman? Did you seriously just suggest I completely change my name because you can't figure out what button to push? Dumbass. I told her if she couldn't figure it out to just do first, middle, married. I got my new health insurance card last week and it's first maiden married. I go by my middle name. My dr's office is beyond confused

  • Oh, and when people piss me off (like, employees), I always ask for their first and last name. It always seems to wipe the smirk of their faces.  Usually, I don't end up going to the top with my complaint, but if their jerky enough, I do and that first and last name is a huge ticket.
  • I'm so glad I didn't change my name.
  • SS card no problem, DMV I went in the first time with everything I needed marriage licence to prove marriage, old ss card (hadn't received new one yet) old ID. They told me I had to wait until I got the new SS card. I had more of an issue with the marriage licence. I had to go down 3 times. Everytime I got everything they said they wanted they sent me home to get something else.
  • I probably wouldn't have moved until they found the form I was missing and I filled it out there while standing in line. That is an excellent strategy, but what was missing is the issue date of my current license. Apparently those jackazzes in Texas for years, didn't include it on the license, so they need some personalized form stating when you got your last license. Why on earth this matters if my license is not expired is BEYOND me.
  • Sorry, all I see is boobs when I see your name.I didn't have any problems at all changing my name. 5 minutes in the DMV, tops.

  • I went to the SS office, asked the security guard if I was in the right place.  He said no and directed me across town.  I came back 2 hours later right before close (of course gov offices close at 4pm, cause thats accessible) and he says with a laugh, "did you find it?"  I filed a complaint and the manager turns to the lady at the front desk and rolls his eyes.  She says, yeah it must be a full moon, all the crazies are coming out.  WTF?  I was livid.  I asked for the managers manager and never heard back. aholesI should never have changed my name (I also took my maiden as my middle).  Its been a year and I havent changed a single charge card/store card.  Just SS, license, and passport.  I'm not touching the rest until they expire.

  • Sorry, all I see is boobs when I see your name. Now there's the answer. I totally should've shown 'em my t1ts!
  • oh and did I mention that when i went to pick up my marriage license to get started on the whole name change process, I realized as I was going up the escalator that they had my birth year wrong.  By 5 years.  I went back down to have them fix it and wa told they were closed.  What?!  I just stood in line for an hour and a half, got half way up the escalator, turned around and stood in line again for 30 minutes.  you dont have 5 minutes to retype this so i dont have to come back AGAIN and waste an afternoon?  again a**holes.I get more and more annoyed that my DH didnt want to change both our last names to a combo of the 2 of ours.  It was a long standing joke, but now i wish he had to go through the crap I did too.
  • Hi Sucrets! Haha about Banana Republic being all careful. I agree, all I had to do was call Mastercard on the phone. They DGAF. So funny. This is making me feel better. Thanks ladies. I have heard the airlines are the WORST. I haven't even attempted those yet, my next few airline tickets are in my maiden name. I traded up on the last name (my maiden name is the subject of ridicule, while his is short & pretty easy) so I guess this is just something I have to bear for a few more months til it's all straightened out.
  • Airlines are awful.  My DH booked a Boston-NYC flight (a route we fly all the time but I usually book for us) in our married name.  Boston agent let me on even though I had nothing but a credit card with my married name.  He is at the security check 8/10 times we fly though and think he felt bad for me. Once we got to NY, we called to change the name on the ticket.  I can only imagine the problems I would have had at JFK.
  • So far it hasn't been too horrible, well, kinda. 3 hours waiting in the ss office for the 5 minutes it took for the guy to put in the request for change. Then DMV was pretty quick, except in VA you aren't allowed to smile for your driver's license anymore so now I have this smartass smirk on  mine because I was trying not to smile. For me the worst is just finding all the little sh*t that your name is attached to and having to change it all.
  • except in VA you aren't allowed to smile for your driver's license anymore I read about that. Super. Weird.
  • did you go to the DMV down by Macys?
  • When I moved to Aspen I took the day off and drove 1.5 hours to the nearest DMV to get my Colorado drivers license.  I stood in line for about 20 minutes for them to tell me that I need two forms of ID.  I showed them my MN license and my passport.  Then they inform me that as of yesterday the state does not accept a passport as a form of ID.  I need my birth certificate.  It makes no f'in sense.  A passport has my photo, and I could be using any random person's birth certificate.  I swore a lot and then had to send away for my birth certificate.
  • did you go to the DMV down by Macys? HI OOT!!!! Yes, that's the only one where you can process out-of-state transfer.Cari, that is insane. I would've been so pissssed.
  • Ooo, my other interesting story is this:I went to the SS office to change my name and gave them the marriage cert.  He gave me back something to check my name on, and my parent's names were misspelled.  I asked him if that mattered and he told me no.  I still don't get how you could be that careless when copying someone's name down, and I'm pissed that my parents names are misspelled somewhere in some system.

  • Sucrets, Somewhere along the way the SS admin had my birthday wrong. It was off by 2 days. Total PITA for me.  Took quite awhile to get it straightened out. I have no idea how it wound up wrong, my guess is someone punched in the wrong # somewhere in some bureaucratic office along the way. I seriously doubt I wrote my own bday wrong somewhere.
  • katiewhompus (not sure if I spelled that right since I can't see it anymore)...just a question for you about VA... I just got my marriage license and the clerk's office seemed pretty clueless when I went there.  I thought I was supposed to change my name on the license, but there was no indication to do that anywhere.  Did you just go into ss and show them your marriage certificate in your maiden name (since that's all it asked for?) and change your name how you wanted there and then continued on down the list? I'm so confused...it seems like this process should be better spelled out somewhere (I've consulted multiple websites, but I think that's only more confusing)...Thank you!!
