Went dress shopping today.

I went dress shopping at Davids Bridal today with my mom and I was pleasently suprised. I was not really excited to go dress shopping, I am plus size and I have a hard time finding dresses and I figured it would be harder with a wedding dress. Plus I have seen a few girls come on here and say how hard it was to find a dress or they did not like the way anything looked. So anyways I was a tad worried. Well I tried on about 10 dresses and almost all of them looked nice. I only looked like a marshmellow in one of them. It was so nice to try on dresses and not feel so discouraged. Now some of them did not look amazing but I was happy to look nice in most of them. I am excited that I thinki I found my dress and if anybody is discouraged with dress shopping I just wanted to say dont get discouraged you will find the one you love!

Re: Went dress shopping today.

  • Glad to hear you had a good experience there!  I couldn't find anything at the DB in my area.  They only had a few styles of plus-size dresses to choose from, and I didn't really care for any of them.  It also didn't help that I was being picky about them- I really didn't want a strapless dress.  Good that you found something you really liked.
  • I was really nervous about dress shopping for the same reason.  The place I went had quite a few bigger sample sizes, but nothing that I was really into.  Thay had only two that I liked.  Fortunately, I really like one of them and bought it.  I didn't enjoy dress shopping and was in and out in 45 minutes and I'm glad I never have to go back - lol. Glad you had a good time and were able to find some dresses you like.
  • Thanks for the words of advice. I'm going next week and I wasn't really looking forward to it at all due to the utter lack of decent plus-sized dresses in upstate NY.

  • I'm a little apprehensive about dress shopping. I'm dieting now and I've lost 10+ pounds so I know I'll be in better shape by that point, but I'll never be a size 6 or 8, especially in wedding sizes.I know that any dress I like can likely be ordered in my size, but I feel like trying on dress after dress that has to be just held up around me will start to wear on my self-esteem, no matter how logically I try to tell myself that sample sizes are unlikely to fit.I don't know if I'll get a dress at Davids, but I do appreciate that they carry samples in tons of sizes.

  • yay! congratulations!I went to Kleinfeld's this weekend and my consultant compared me to her boyfriend who's "very confident, even though he's 400 pounds."Needless to say, I'm a size 18 and NOT 400lbs, but even if I was you'd think my consultant would be smart enough not to say that to a bride.

  • i have a very hard time finding street clothes that fit nice.. but man did i ever love how wedding dresses looked.  it pays to have a curvy body with gowns i think :)
  • Wow, especially at a boutique like Kleinfeld's... that's ridiculous. I called a place in Rochester that carries Pronovias gowns and told the lady I was a size 16, and she was like, "Well... the biggest sample we have is a 12, so we can hold it in front of you or clamp it to your clothes to see if you like it." Seriously?!? Seriously?!?! That's the best they can do?!

  • I think that Davids might be a good place to start looking because you can try on samples in your size, that way you know what looks good on you, then go to other places that you may only be able to hold it up to you. Even though I love the drss I found at DB I am going to look at other places just to see. I was not planning on a DB dress but I loved it and will prbably get it, it is also nice that it is afforadble, if anybody would like to see the dresses I can post pics, but not till tmr.
  • I didn't buy my dress from DB, but I am definetly glad we went there to look. I am a bigger girl & I was able to try on tons of different styles.. which helped when I was at a local bridal shop to narrow down what style (poofy, a-line, high-wasted..etc) would actually look good on me ... even if I couldn't zip 'er up!

  • OMG Alisonz, who says that? I can just imagine her thought process: "Hmm, maybe comparing her to a happily morbidly obese man will cheer her up!"But yeah, glad to hear OP had a good experience.  Just went for my first fitting- they think the dress fits perfectly and told me not to lose any weight.  If I don't lose a couple lbs I won't be able to breathe.  Also it was too short and they had to do some adjusting.  So if you're tall make sure they take that into account and don't just assume it'll be long enough!
  • If you have an Alfred Angelo near you, you might want to consider trying there.  They're similar to David's in the fact that they're a chain and carry a big selection of all sizes.  Prices weren't bad either.  I was much happier with the selection of gowns they had to try on, and did end up buying my dress there.
  • amethystanima-I know, I'm still debating whether or not to call and complain about her. I know she wasn't trying to be insulting... but if you expect people to pay a bazillion dollars for a dress, I think its fair to expect a certain level of customer service.

  • I ended up getting my dress at DB and love it.  I must've tried on every plus size dress they had until I found this one.    I went to 2 boutiques and they hardly had anything that would fit over my hips or boobs, so it was really nice to be able to find something so flattering on me :)  Good luck!
