Would you call?

I'm sorry Calypso, but I just can't shake that you wouldn't call the cops on that woman. I would have taken down the license plate and called CPS, stat. So the question is, would you call if you saw someone doing something that puts a child in danger? Where do you draw the line?

Re: Would you call?

  • Most definitely.  There is absolutely no excuse to abuse a child. If someone is spanking their child, I usually try to turn a blind eye because I think it can be an effective form of discipline *in certain instances*.   If it appears to be excessive, I would definitely call the police or CPS.  If a child is left alone, I would do the same.
  • Yes. I have called about dogs before and I would most definitely call for a child.

  • Not only would I call, I have more than a few times in the past. And I don't stop with children, that includes animals left in cars in the middle of summer with the windows left open about 3" - and I live in Florida.

  • I would definitely call.  You can't just go through life expecting other people to do the right thing.

  • I would absolutely call the police if I saw someone putting a child in danger. If anything maybe it would scare them enough so that whatever they were doing didn't happen again. I feel like if no one did anything about it, whatever that woman was doing would just continue to happen (and eventually something really bad could happen to the child because of it).

  • If I saw a child left alone in a car, yes I would call the cops.  There were too many stories when I lived in Florida of children being left in hot cars and dying and it has always stuck with me.

  • Yes, I would call the cops in a hot second.  I was in a store once and this lady was yelling at her child and she smacked him in the face, and a store employee came over and said if she didn't stop that the store would be phoning the police.  She looked completely taken aback.  I think a lot of parents continue to do things like that because nobody bothers to call them on it.

  • I'm not sure what my line is.  There's a lot of grey, but yes, there are times when I will call if I see a child in danger. There are also times when I don't.

  • Yup.  I have done it when there was a dog locked in a car in really hot summer weather.   I would definitely do it if it was a child.

  • A few years ago, for three days in a row, I saw a woman pull up to a busy intersection on a moped with a small child - maybe 3? - sitting in front of her on it, with no helmet. I called the police every single time I saw it. I don't know if they ever were able to stop her, but I did stop seeing her.

  • I hated getting spanked.  Only I didn't get spanked, I got a switchin'.  And my grandma (who lived across the street from us for my entire childhood) was the one who switched me.  She'd make me go pick out the peach branch in the back yard I was getting a switchin' with.  And if I tried to be slick and pick an old one that would break the first time, it was even worse.  Seriously, I would have been a horrible, horrible child if not for my grandma's switchin's.
