Seriously, FI?

I get home from work last night to have this wonderful conversation re: my shower TYs:FI (proudly): I put all the thank you notes in the mail for you!Me: Awesome, thanks.  So you got stamps for the ones that didn't have stamps?FI: What?Me: Umm, remember, I ran out of stamps for the last few?FI: Err, no?Me: So, wait, you put ALL of them in the mail?  FI: Uhh, yeah.Honestly who sends a stack of mail off without checking to see that all of it has stamps and addresses?  Apparently FI, who also apparently doesn't listen to me at all when he is on his computer or he would have heard me mention that I had run out of stamps.  I put return addresses on all of them but they had my old address on them.  They should be forwarded back to me, right?  Otherwise I have no idea which 4 didn't have stamps so I am effed.  BTW he thinks this is all my fault for putting them all in the same pile.  Grrr.

Re: Seriously, FI?

  • Actually...I wouldn't have had them in the same pile.

  • They should be returned to you if a) you have your mail forwarded and b) your request to forward mail hasn't expired. Typically the requests last 30 days. Don't be too hard on him. He's just a man.

  • Do you have extra envelopes? I've had mail without postage returned to me with a horrible stamp saying "insufficient postage" across the envelope.
  • Communication FAIL, apparently. But yes, I think they should be forwarded back to you. So really not anything to get too worked up about.Ok cool that is what I am hoping.  I don't even know why I put them in the same pile, I guess I just didn't anticipate FI actually taking the time to mail them.
  • I'm with moose.  I know my husband and myself too well.  I would have had seperate piles and put post it's explaining why.  We had some international invitations so that's what I did for those that needed international postage since all I had was domestic stamps at home.  You'll get them back in a couple days.  How many were there without stamps roughly?

  • This is an important lesson.  Never put things in the same pile.
  • I almost did this with my sister's baby shower invites...I had them in the same bag, but clipped separately, and one of the un-stamped ones got stuck with the stamped ones. Luckily I checked them before I dropped them in though...They should get forwarded back to you if they didn't have postage on them. :) GL!
  • I think forward requests actually last 1 year. And yes, they'll be returned to you. I did this with a bill once and it came back to me.

  • If your return addy is on them, they will just be sent back to you. Did the ones on the top of the pile have stamps? I can see where he might have gotten confused.

I would have had seperate piles and put post it's explaining why.I will have to do this going forward.  I think there were only 4 of them (out of the 13 he mailed yesterday).  Luckily it is all family so I don't think any of them will judge me for the delay.
  • Canada Post doesn't use stamps  for things like incorrect postage or addresses :) They use a lable that you can peel off. Another point in the win column for Canada.

  • Don't be too hard on him. He's just a man.True.  The sad thing is he really thought he was doing me a favor.  I think they will definitely be forwarded though since we just moved on July 15th (I think we get forwards for 6 months) and I do have extra envelopes so the damage isn't too extreme.
  • He thought he was doing you a favor, so don't give him too much flack.   When FI does that stuff I always thank him for the effort.  At least he still tries now. :)

  • Pumpkin we've had mail with an ugly stamp on it.

  • If you address is on them they will be sent back. I honestly don't think I could be too mad though. He was trying to help which is a lot more than some FI's do.
  • I probably would have had them all in the same pile too, because I wouldn't expect my DH to send out my mail since that's not something he typically does.  Anyway, you should get the mail back if it hasn't been more than 180 days or something since you moved.  Otherwise, I don't know, maybe the recipients will have to pay the postage.  That would be fun.

  • Pumpkin we've had mail with an ugly stamp on it. Really?? I've never seen any mail we've had returned (either personal or business) with a stamp! I guess I was wrong.Boo me.

  • For personal mail forwarding only last 30 days. For bills and stuff like that it's 6 months and if it has a yellow sticker on it requesting forwarding that lasts a year.
