Law Enforcement Invites - Proper Etiquette

Here's the question - when inviting my fiance's coworkers who are in law enforcement is it proper to use their rank rather than "Mr." or Ms." For example - the man who introduced us is Lt. D. Powell. But on the invitation is it proper to address him as Lieutenant or Mister? Thanks in advance for your help!~Courtney

Re: Law Enforcement Invites - Proper Etiquette

  • Thanks, soon to be Mrs. Vogt! This is a toughy since there's not much out there on the topic.
  • I would say Mr. just because this isn't an Officer's Ball they are being invited to. I mean, think of it this way, have you ever seen a checkbook read Lt. D. Powell? But, if you are really unsure. Ask your FI what he would prefer to do.
  • That's the thing - my fiance isn't sure either. It is a little awkward and potentially disrespectful addressing a Lieutenant, Captain or Chief as Mr./Ms. But that may have just answered the question - avoid being disrespectful.
