Re: NWR - Obama addressing school kids debate

  • To clarify - yes we have been told we are NOT allowed to view the speech in class. We can show it "at a later date" however in order to do so we will need parental consent.

  • I am so glad this thread is here. Some of my closest friends are outraged about this speech and are holding their kids out of school so they do not have to listen.  I know I'm not a parent but I have convinced myself that I must have missed something for there to be so much backlash. I am not an Obama supporter, but he is the President and as others have said, agree with him or not, I think it sends the absolute wrong message to kids to have parents who tell them not to respect that office and listen to his opinion.  I don't understand how this speech is different from past Presidents.  I'm just over the ignorance of some people.
  • I am late to this discussion and I don't have a problem with the president addressing school kids however....this is the first time my school district ever forwarded out about the president's address to students.  If you read it, it gives curriculum suggestions, etc.  I myself have more of a problem with Dept. of Ed. telling me what to teach in my classroom.  If you want to tell me what to teach, then you need to fully fund education in every state.  I won't be showing it though because I really can't fit it in with my curriculum where it is right now (this will be our third week).  I seriously doubt my parents would have pulled me out of school due to a speech from the president.  They made me go to school when there was a threat of a gun showing up at school one day.
  • I am not an Obama supporter, but I don't see a problem with the President addressing the students. I also think that the "right wing crazies" comments on here make you guys just as bad so those people you are calling "crazy." The judging and name calling needs to stop. So you disagree with each other. We should be able to politely disagree without mocking each other.
