Colorado?

FI and I are thinking of honeymooning in CO to save on airfare (it's an 8 hour drive from where we live).  I've been to Denver/Colorado Springs back in high school, and FI's never been.  I remember really liking it at the time, but my concern is that since we'd be going in mid-May, the weather would be too warm for wintery activities and too cool for summery activities.  (We're not HUGE outdoorsy people, but probably do a little bit of hiking, and want to get in some pool/spa relaxation time.)Any Coloradans have any advice?  We're looking at maybe staying in Vail for a few days and Denver or somewhere else for a few days.  Recommendations appreciated.  TIA!

Re: Colorado?

  • I live in Colorado Boulder/Denver area.  You are right - May will be an "in-between" month as far as seasonal activities go, however if you are not real outdoorsy people anyway I don't think it would be a big deal.  Skiing will be over, but there will still be wet snow up in the mountains.  White water rafting would be good at his time of year- either on the Colorado or on the Poudre up by Fort Collins.  The pp had great suggestions for the Colorado/Manitou Springs area.  Since you are not so much into outdoor activities, you may want to consider doing some of the museums, art, cultural, sporting events/activities in Denver or Boulder.  Boulder itslef is very unique and offers tons to do! There is interesting shopping, people, and stret performers on Pearl Street, light hiking in the foothills, great food and restaurtants, breweries and a meadery, and much more.  Another posibility is Estes Park.  It tends to be a little touristy, but offers frun shops, food, festivals, and you can stay at the Stanley Hotel, which is a huge beautiful hotel- the setting from Stephen King's movie the Shining. This town is at the entrance of Roky Mountain National Park where you can drive up the highest paved road in the US at 12,00 feet- a great way to see the mountains without much hiking.  GL!
  • I live in Downtown Denver and just wanted to add one more thing to everyone else's suggestions. If you like sports, Rockies baseball games are a ton of fun and pretty cheap. Tickets for the outfield seats are only $4! Also, not all skiing will be over with if you want to go. There is one site, Arapahoe Basin, that is open until the first weekend in June. If you are in the mountains, it will be cold at night so bring a sweatshirt!
