Nestesque Question

So, we close on the house next week :obnoxious squeeing & !!!!!111!!!:It's twice the size of the space we're in now so I've been keeping an eye on craigslist. A few days ago a beautiful set of marble topped antique end tables came up for only $35. The wood looked kind of crappy so I planned to sand them and maybe do a lacquer finish in black or some funky color, and put them nursery or dressing room (yes, I'm converting a 11x14 bedroom into a giant closet/dressing room. I realize I have a problem). But, when Pete came home with them, the wood looks much better than I thought. I'm still not crazy about the oak finish, but I'm second guessing painting them, and now considering doing a darker finish. Here they are, what do you think:

Re: Nestesque Question

• I'd go with the fun color idea.
• I think dark stain or black paint would work.  Change the drawer pulls toogreat deal
•  I think they look fine the way they are but what you described sounds awesome specialty for your use for them.Go for the black!
• Agree with OOT(sidenote: how the heck you been gal?)hardware change and some paint and you got yourself some nifty finds
• From the pictures, that doesn't look to me like they are oak. Walnut, perhaps, but I can't tell for sure. If they are solid wood, I wouldn't paint them. Veneer, yes paint them.
• And change the drawer pulls. Those are pretty frugly.
• I'm all about sanding and repainting furniture. I think that sounds like an awesome idea. We're taking two beautiful cherry chests that FI had from when he was living back at home and sanding and painting them black to match our new bed. No shame.

• I vote fun colour for nursery or dark finish for dressing room.
• Definitely a fun color! They have an awesome shape. I hate you for your dressing room.
• 1.  I'm so jealous of your dressing room. 2.  I think a cherry stain would look great. 3.  I agree with everyone else to change the hardware. Great find, laine!

• I would stain them a dark color.
• Ok, seems like the consensus is to paint them. Maybe just to be sure I'll get a finish sample and a paint sample and try it out on a leg or something. My biggest problem is typically I think it's sacrilege to paint good quality wood. Especially old good quality wood. I think I need to get over that in certain circumstances. Sara - Definitely solid wood, no idea what kind. Meaghan - Things have been crazy during the day, and most of my nights have been spent packing. Hopefully things calm down after we move and finish all the work on the house (ha!). You look ridiculously gorgeous in your sig picture. I'm informing Pete that my dressing room is Knot-Approved. I had to fight him for it, but he gave in when he realized he could have full reign over the real closets.

• awww thanks :) I saw through knot stalking you bought a house which is AWESOME. So glad to hear things are coming together for you and baby too!! wowowow. you are quite the grown up now!! jealousssss.DH and I have baby fever. We are quelling it with an IUD for the next 3 years or so until I get my job going.
• (yes, I'm converting a 11x14 bedroom into a giant closet/dressing room. I realize I have a problem)I did the same thing we moved into our house. I love having a place to blow dry my hair and get ready in peace, but I still take up another guest room closet...I second darker stain and change drawer pulls.
• you are quite the grown up now!!I know, how the hell did that happen?? I think 3 years is the perfect amount of time to be a cool young married couple before baby time. We're just too impatient ;).

• I wouldn't paint them.  I would strip them and refinish them in a darker or lighter stain that compliments that marble top.

• I also think it's sacrilege to paint over good quality wood.  I looove the dark stain idea.  That would look awesome!  And I definitely vote to change the hardware.
