Creepy- prom garters

Now I know it's been a while since I went to a prom, but I don't understand why you'd need one of these.....http://www.advantagebridal.com/neprgabrvico.html

Re: Creepy- prom garters

• Ever ask yourself why anyone would think those we appropriate? I can imagine the delight of young men trying to get those off...
• 17-year-olds do not need garters. I'd be creeped out if I had a daughter who was getting ready for prom and slipped on a garter. Although, I was looking at FSIL's prom photos last year (she graduated from high school this summer), and the dresses these girls are wearing these days are ris-que. Holy goodness I don't know that I'd let my daughter wear some of those!
• We did this at my prom in 2001/2002.  Actually, I didn't because my date was too shy.  But most normal people did.Girl wears garter, guy removes garter.  In return, he gives her his bowtie. There's a song and everything.

• No joke, our favor at prom was a garter in our school colors.  I didn't think anything of it... until now.
• I definitely can't think of any reason either!!!

• Brie, I find that creepy. And ditto pp, some of the dresses these days? You could probably actually see the garter.I sound old.

• I totally thought it was normal.  I even have pictures of me with my girlfriends all raising our dresses so you can see them. The guys put the garters on their rearview mirrors, too.

• Brie, I can't believe the school allowed that!
• Brie, wow, I've never heard of that! I think prom in Canada is less of a big deal than in the US
• This is so wrong. Now, I owned a garter belt when I was prom age, but it was actually functional, for seamed 1950's stockings. But no one was removing it for me in a room full of other minors.

• I went to a pretty conservative high school, too.  They had really strict rules for what you could/couldn't wear to prom (no stomach showing, no strapless, no super low cleavage). It wasn't really raunchy.  There were teachers every 3 feet.

• Now, the garters on rearview mirrors i've heard of, but usually wedding garters (it's one reason I'm doing a camo one, in case FI wants to-I don't think he will though).

• There were no garters at my prom, but even though my parents weren't super conservative, they were involved in the dress selection, I was horrified by some on the dresses girls were wearing.I wouldn't have been caught dead in them!
• I'm with Brie.  I had a garter, wasn't a big deal.  My date didn't get to take it off of me, cause we weren't dating or anything, just friends; he was still upset about that though.  Whatever.  I got his bowtie, he got my garter.  Seemed pretty harmless.Lot less harmless than some of the dresses girls wear these days, IMO.
• I saw it with girls I went to school with as early as the 8th grade dance. I distinctly remember one group of girls from my grade school. They all had garters (and prom dresses). The pattern only repeated itself all through high school. The local wedding stores advertised garters for dances, proms, etc.
• We never did a song or anything, but my high school (and pretty much everyone in the area, I've never heard any different) would buy garters and guys would buy extra bow ties. Sometime during the night you'd either take it off or give it to your date and it usually ended up around a rearview mirror. Honestly I never thought anything of it.
• I wore a garter to prom. I have a picture of my best friends and I showing them. They were tradition at my high school.

• I agree with mocha, they're nothing compared to some of the dresses girls wear.
• Oops, now I feel bad. I'd just never heard of it. I think it must be one of those "regional things".
• I never even thought anything of it either.  Almost every girl at my prom  had one.  Mine actually says, "Prom 2005" on it.
• Which reminds me when my FI realized brides wear garters and he suggested that I reuse my prom one cause its white anyway and that would save money. Yes, because the garter is really whats going to make or break the budget lol.
• The dresses that some girls wear these days are disgusting - deep v-necks, side cut outs, high slit. Ugh. DH and I have seen some pictures in the newspaper around prom time and have vowed never to let our future daughter(s) out of the house like that.

• I mean, what parent would let their child go to a school function dressed like this?

• Yeah GG, in that respect I can already tell I'm not going to be a "cool" mom. "That's nice honey, now where's the other half of the dress?"
• What father would allow his teenager daughter to leave the house in that?! Look at that side-boob action!
• I'd never let my daughter out of hte house in an ill-fitting dress like that, regardless of how skimpy it is.  Seriously, her boobs are trying to escape.
• gg, that's what I was thinking in relation to prom garters. That dress makes me cringe for her. But I can see how y'all did it,  and it doesn't sound creepy at all.

• All of our friends purchased garters too... we took fun pictures and then the guys all hung them in their rear view mirrors. I don't think it was a big deal. That was back in '99.

• Lynds - I won't be either. No way, no how.
