Kansas City peeps

Since it's slow, thought I'd see how many of you are from KC or have visited.  FI and I are going there for our honeymoon in a few weeks and he has only been there to visit a few bars.  I have looked over their travel site a hundred times but I'd like some personal opinions.  Any good recs on where we should stay/eat/visit?

Re: Kansas City peeps

  • I went to KU and Lawrence is definitely a fun place to visit, at least for the day. The campus is beautiful to walk around, and downtown has some neat local shops and restaurants. Mass St. is the main street downtown. Definitely a great atmosphere there.KU football games are definitely a lot of fun, especially now that they don't suck, like they did when I went there. ;) KU also has a neat sports museum adjacent to Allen Fieldhouse (where the basketball team plays), and a political museum.I definitely second The Plaza as a neat place to shop and walk around as well.

  • Coming out of lurking... Thoughts on restaurants: Bluestem is a great special occasion restaurant. Not cheap, but definitely worth a honeymoon splurge. Blue Nile is a great Ethiopian restaurant in the City Market. I Agree with PP, do BBQ at Aurthur Bryant. Jack Stack is more about the atmosphere than the food. Think of Jack Stack as eating BBQ at The French Cafe. ( I assume you're from the Omaha area since you're having your reception at Fountains Ballroom).
  • If you do end up going to Lawrence for a game make sure to eat in downtown lawrence. I still dream about some of the restaurants in lawrence. Its nice to see other Jayhawk fans and Omaha brides! :)
  • Wait, I can't let this thread get taken over by KU fans.M-I-Z!

  • I had a couple of clients in KC and used to go there for lunch twice a year.  Total blank on the restaurants, clients chose them.Just loved going to KC for lunch and flying back the same day.
  • I grew up near Kansas City and have lived here for four years - I'll chime in on a few of my faves!- Agree with Bluestem - totally worth the splurge. Get there early and have a few drinks in the bar area, it's very chic (well, for KC!) Excellent food.- We live near 39th Street, a funky area near KU Med with tons of local restaurants. Thomas and Room 39 are great, and the Jazz is fun on weekends - live music, great Cajun food.- Nelson, Kemper and American Jazz are all great museums - we almost had our wedding at the Jazz Museum! Their Blue Note bar has awesome local jazz bands on weekends as well.- This is probably lame, but it will be near Halloween and my favorite thing to do is the haunted houses in the West Bottoms. They are pretty scary (well I think so!) if you're into that kind of thing at all - but maybe not the best honeymoon activity ;) - Power and Light = I personally am not really into the scene there, lots of chain bars and very club-y. Always lots of bachelorette parties there. But they do sometimes have fun concerts there.- And, definitely do BBQ! Arthur Bryant's is great, but Oklahoma Joe's is my favorite. It's actually in a gas station, but really really yummy. Hope this helps! If you have any questions about the area or anything let me know - hope you have a great honeymoon!!
  • I missed if someone recommended the Crown Plaza and the Hallmark/Crayola stuff....

I love you Missy. Even though you are not smart enough to take online quizzes to find out really important information. ~cew
  • Thanks everyone!  Great help.  I think I've been to the crayola place.. we went to KC for a senior trip years ago and it rained when we were supposed to go to Worlds of Fun so we spent the day in a mall.  I believe the crayola/Hallmark place is in that mall.
