So I just called and ambulance

. . .  well about an hour ago actually. I coach the University of Rochester Women's rugby club and one of my Freshman took a bad tackle and landed on her head. After observing nausea, dizziness and a delayed pupil response, we called the paramedics. I just got off the phone with her parents, who are driving to meet me at the hospital now, I hate making those calls. And the Bills lost in the final moments of the game tonight. Bad sports day :(Tell me about some of your sports injuries so I can make her feel better (I've exhausted all my stories).

  • sorry about the typos, that's what happens when I knot from my blackberry
  • Tore a ligament in my knee jumping on the bed. At age 20. And then didn't care for it properly, so at 27 I walk with a pretty noticeable limp.Because I JUMPED on the BED. It's a sport, right?
On bed rest since Groundhog's Day and every day since has been exactly the same.

  • I fell off of the top of the cheerleading pyramid in 6th grade and broke my arm.   Thats about all I got.  My sport has always been swimming and we tend not to hurt ourselves too much with that one.  :)

"Whatever East. You're just mad I RSVP'd "lame" to your pre-wedding sleepover."
  • I separated my shoulder in a bike accident. Which sounds badass, until you learn that I was drunk, and biking home from the bar.
  • TJ that sucks.  I strained a ligament in my knee falling off of my trampoline. But all it required was an ace bandage for a few days (I don't think that did anything) and some ibuprofen.

  • Oh, and TJ, of course jumping on the bed is a sport. They are considering it for the 2012 Olympics, but cannot agree on rules to judge said jumping.
  • Technically I broke my arm when I was 6 playing the card game "Go Fish."  I also had to have surgery on my ankle after I injured it skipping through a public park.  I'm pretty awesome like that.
  • I got my only broken bone playing basketball - busted one of myfingers.  I jammed them a lot also.

  • I gave myself a bloody nose doing yoga a few weeks ago.  Yes, yoga.  (overly enthusiastic child's pose)I broke my two smallest toes in my senior year of college racing my sister to the bathroom.

  • Ooh, I have some swimming stories... one of the better ones is when one of the girls on my team was going in for a flip-turn and got too close and *smashed* her nose on the wall. Broken nose, blood everywhere. In track, there was a guy at our school who slipped on the track and fell during a race -- nice compound fracture with the leg bone sticking through the skin.

  • Thanks for all the stories! TJ jumping on the bed is not going to be an Olympic sport but rugby will be!
  • skiing i did a complete yard sale (lost everything that was not strapped and buckled on gloves, goggles, skis, poles, even my neck warmer!) thought nothing of it. 2 weeks later retuning one of the communal helmets on our ski team fell on a patch of ice and reaggrivated my neck from the incident before. ski patrol was called this time and asked if i had any tingling in my neck which i did. well they took me to the hospital and had xrays done. i tore a ligament near the base of my head. aparently when you tear this ligament it is more near your collarbone. the doctor on duty tells me and my dad "wow, i have never seen it torn like that before!" if i jerk my head quickly i mess it up again.....
  • I trained for my first 5k, and the morning before I'm walking down the stairs to go to work and BOOM! Foot inverted and I landed with all my weight on my ankle. By the time I got to the urgent care, it was the size of a soft ball. Turned out to be a super bad sprain. By the next day I had major bruising half-way up my calf and my toes had turned a purplish-black. Lets just say I ended up missing that first 5k. This past Sunday, a friend of mine was racing Ironman Wisconsin. At mile 101 of the 112 mile bike, he started swerving and seeing stars. He got off the bike and fainted, a total DNF (did not finish...which is a pretty disheartening thing in trialthon). He'd lost 17 lbs since that morning.
  • I beg to differ with East.  I broke two fingers swimming, and destroyed my shoulder.  Several tiny (seriously tiny) tears in my rotator cuff, impingement, tendonitis, and bursitis.  Though I guess it's not an injury in the sense of your player's injury.  I hope she's alright!

  • Hey Maggy, my FI was at Ironman Wisconsin too! This year he was a medical volunteer, but today he signed up to race it next year. It'll be pretty darn exciting.

  • I have tendonitis in my left wrist from a college dance team injury. We were doing some stunt where we were on the ground in a push-up position and in a triangle. I was in the back row, and each row put their legs up on the shoulders of the row behind them and we did a wave-like push up (sounds strange, and it was) During practice, the girls in front of me donkey-kicked to get their feet on my shoulders and came down to hard, hence pushing me down (I wasn't ready for it) and jammed my wrist. If I over-use it, like typing too long, play guitar, hold babies, etc. it gets really sore for about 2 days.kinda lame and confusing, huh? hope your rugby girl gets better!

  • I'm WAY late, but I have a ton of injuries, though none really sport related. I did bruise my assbone flipping off the top of a pyramid in cheerleading. You could also count a horrible sprain when I fell off the bar at Coyote Ugly in New Orleans. We'll call it competitive dance. :)
  • I'm also late on this post, but I do have a sports related injury...sorta.I managed to break my toe playing tetherball when I was in the first grade. The kid I was playing with was messing with the thetherball pole and managed to unscrew it, making the top half fall on my foot.

  • Kinda late here but:When I was a ballerina I had lots of minor soft tissue injuries, mostly knee and hip. The bad one, though, was coming out of a pique turn badly, en pointe, and jamming a bone spur in my big toe joint (where the metatarsal meets the first toe bone) up into the soft tissue. That ended my career (it was ending anyway). Several years later I was playing soccer and dug my toe into a hole in the field while crossing the ball in front of the goal. I snapped off another bone spur on the back of my heel bone that had formed when I was dancing and had to have that removed later that year. Is your rugby girl ok? Concussions are awful, poor girl.
