Mrs. Vogt

If you don't mind me asking, where are you ordering your BBQ from for the wedding?  FI and I are having a BBQ style rehearsal dinner at my parent's house and will cater the food in from somewhere.  My parents gave us one suggestion but they aren't in business anymore so I'm trying to rack my brain for some good BBQ.  Our main dish will probably be BBQ beef or pork.

Re: Mrs. Vogt

  • Sorry to thread jack, but my mama went to Sam's Club and got these pre-bagged bags of shreaded pork and beef. They were amazing! Just threw them in the crock pot. I think the we got one of each and they were maybe $30 a bag and they fed 50 people. Maybe try Sam's or Costco?

  • Famous Dave's caters and it's delicious.
  • Tony Roma's is pretty good.  Thanks for making me want BBQ, dangit.
  • We're getting it from Famous Dave's in Lincoln. They cater a lot (they do the governor's party for the opening football game), and it's so good. I honestly think it's better than when you go to the restaurant and get food from them. We're getting roasted chicken and brisket for our meats, mashed potatos, salad, drunken apples, and of course the corn bread. It's really cheap too. We ordered a la carte, and it was like $9 or $10/person. FI's cousin used them for her RD also and was thrilled. I imagine any of the Famous Dave's would be equally good. You could also look into Skeeter Barnes or Parkers (I think the closest one to omaha is in Ashland)

  • We will probably get our sides from Hy-Vee since we are using them for our wedding catering, so basically we just need the meat.  I wasn't sure if you were using a smaller, not well known, place because sometimes those are the best!
  • Oh, and their sandwiches are even cheaper. Some of their meals start out at like $5/person, especially if you only offer one choice. I don't have my catering menu in my office, but I could run out to my car at lunch and send you some of the prices if you want.

  • Yeah, they definitely are the best. I wish we could have found someone local who could do what we wanted for as many people as we wanted. I'd much rather support a local business than a chain, but the FD in Lincoln has treated us like they're a local place. I have nothing but good things to say about them.

  • Good deal, thanks for all the recs.  I really never thought of Famous Dave's, we were focusing so much on smaller meat lockers but aren't having much luck.  I'm sure FI will love that idea too.
  • The other thing you could do cheaply is make pulled pork. You can buy pork roasts, cut the fat out of them (and cut the bone out), and they make seasoning packets for $1 for pulled pork. They're right in the spice aisle. We make pulled pork at home like this almost every other weekend. Each spice packet makes 3lbs of meat, and depending on how many sides you have, FD tells me to figure about 1/4 to 1/3 of a pound of meat per person. So, each packet would feed 9-12 people. When we make it for big parties, we make two batches in crock pots, so that's 18-24 servings. We plan to make pulled pork for our welcome dinner, acutally. Then just serve it up with some bbq sauce on buns. Very economical and super easy (since you just let it cook all day).

  • Now I'm drooling.  I want Famous Dave's real, real bad! We had pulled pork sammies (made by my aunt with my grandma's homemade bbq sauce) at our wedding, and everyone went nuts over them.  Vogt, your wedding is going to be awesome with the the good food and the sparkling cider! Yum.
  • Aw, thanks Vicmo! I really hope everyone's going to have a blast. I really want all the things we love about fall (family bbq, sitting by the fire, smell of hay, etc.) to come out in our reception. Oh, and the alcohol. Lots of alcohol :)

  • That is a good thought, Vogt.  We have totally put this rehearsal dinner to the side so now we are actually having to figure it out quickly.  I think we'll have around 60-70 people (we decided to invite OOT guests since it's at my parent's house).  When are you doing the welcome dinner?  Like a few days before when OOT guests arrive or for the rehearsal dinner?
