Snakes on a plane, and in my yard

Possum found a pile of snakes in our backyard just now.  She picked one up, but she dropped it when I told her to.  I hope she didn't hurt it.

  • Awesome. I love snakes. Although I've heard that sometimes they can infest houses?? That's creepy.
  • Mandy is going to pee her pants when she sees this thread.

  • pile of snakes Disgusting!  This sends chills up my spine.
  • Don't let Mandy see this thread. :/ What are you going to do about the pile o'snakes?
  • We've never had a problem in the house (knock on wood).  I like them in the backyard to keep out pests.  They were right by our vegetable garden.I must admit I was really scared when Possum picked it up;  I was so worried she'd get bit.  But then I realized there was no way it was poisonous.  It still scared me though.
  • yuck... I do not have an issue with a snake, but a pile I would be creeped out.

  • Yeah, I didn't know snakes huddled?  Or whatever the heck they were doing?  It was creepy.
  • I just shuddered and almost started panicking. Ew, ew, ew, ew. I can't come visit your yard now :(

  • Snakes make nests or dens or whatever. And maybe they huddle for warmth? Not sure how that works when you're cold-blooded, disgusting, legless creatures.

  • How big were they? If they were small they might have just hatched.

  • So I was watching a movie last night with DH and this huge snake was hanging from a tree and bit a guy in the face....then the other man shot him for slowing down the group. He was a bad guy so I didn't feel too bad for him. Just sharing.
  • This thread makes my skin crawl. Eeeeeeek!
  • LOL jfgrad. They were small but not tiny.  I've seen baby snakes in our yard before and they were the size of worms.  These were similar but larger, so I think these were full grown.A snake laid eggs under our doormat and we had like a dozen baby snakes under there when I was sweeping.  Mandy would have had a heart attack.
  • Dear lord. That would haunt me.
  • And maybe they huddle for warmth? Not sure how that works when you're cold-blooded, disgusting, legless creatures. Thanks for the laugh.

  • I would cry so hard if I found that. My grandma called FI to place a trade for her the other day, and was telling him that she was checking for cracks in her basement so "critters" don't get in. FI told me she meant snakes, and he should do the same for our house. I immediately stopped going in the basement.

  • My irrational fear of snakes is why I will probably stay in MN for my entire life now, instead of moving someplace warmer and with less snow like I'd like to.  Because a lot more snakes (and lizards, and other creepy crawly things) live where it's warmer.

  • Yeah snakes don't usually bother me but a whole pile of them near a pet would freak me out. Even if they were just garden snakes.Once when I was little, my mom found a huge speckled king snake right next to our puppy (the dog weighed maybe 4 lbs at the time, we had just gotten him) and freaked out.  She was about to chop its head off with a shovel, but then she decided to take the puppy inside and go look up the snake in our Audubon book.  She realized it wasn't poisonous and let it live :)  I just think it's funny that she stopped mid-attack to go look it up.

  • I was riding once and I got off my horse to fix my boot, and I led him over by the garden retaining wall to mount and there was a snake in the garden.  I didn't see it until I had one foot in the stirrup and the horse shied away from me.  I hopped off the wall and landed funny on my ankle, saw the snake, tried to fall in the direction of the horse, and sprained the bejeezus out of my ankle.  Fuucking snake!

  • That sounds like something I would do!Growing up in a boy scout/camping/hiking family, I know there are only 2 poisonous snakes native to this area, and it definitely wasn't either of them.  Although now I'm curious to see exactly what it was.
  • And sidenote to my story, I think it's incredibly amusing and stupid that I was more afraid of falling near a harmless 2 foot grass snake than I was of falling under a startled horses feet.  Stupid, stupid, stupid Jessica.

  • Is that a hibernaculum (and I learned that from watching children's nature shows on TV when my children were really young)? And this thread definitely creeps me out, too. We have rattlesnakes, copperheads, and water moccasins where I live now. Moved away from the coral snakes when we left SC. ICK!!!
  • I have no idea, but I think it's a little early for hibernation.  I am TERRIFIED of water moccasins.  They are by far the worst and I see them almost every time I'm out on the lake.
  • I think your dog disturbed a snake orgy.  Some breeds pile on the fun to make the bebes.
