Receiving Line Question

Is it necessary for the bride and groom to be in the receiving line if they are going to be visiting each table during the reception?  What is the etiquette on this?

Re: Receiving Line Question

  • Official etiquette is that you should *either* do a receiving line *or* make sure you greet every guest personally during the reception.
  • Nope.  A receiving line isn't necessary if you're going to do table visits.
  • You don't have to do both. However, if you're going from table to table, don't have a receiving line at all. It would be weird to have one sans the B&G.
  • No, but what is the point of a receiving line without the bride and groom? As long as you talk to everyone at some point I don't think you need a receiving line at all.

  • Are you going to take etiquette advice from a meth-addicted bride?
  • Whoops, and no, you can't do a receiving line without b&g.
  • Thanks for the answers- now I'll have to convince FMIL that this is the case, since she is ALL ABOUT the receiving line.  I don't mind doing it except that it will severely cut into the available time for pictures, and we are definitely doing table visits.
  • "Are you going to take etiquette advice from a meth-addicted bride?"I don't discriminate :)Wish I could make one of those, or have any sig pic, but I'm always doing this at work....I am soooo productive.
  • Definitely don't have the receiving line without the bride and groom, but I prefer a receiving line over table visits.  I want to have a moment to stand and say hello, not hastily swallow my food and look up at the couple from my chair, or miss seeing them when I'm in the bathroom.

  • if you are having over 75 guests at the reception it is actually reccomended not to do the recieving line since it will take to long to have everyone go through.  (maybe that will help with the FMIL)
