oh Fi....

FI was prescribed Ambien to help him sleep. Apparantly he just took it and texted me to "ball if you can." I took that to mean call instead of ball...I ended up having the most ridiculous conversation with him about how the room was "filling up with cotton candy", the bed was moving and the computer and desk was dancing....Now I just got a text from him which says "here there be dragons"...Wow...I have never spoken to someone who has taken Ambien...is this normal?

Re: oh Fi....

  • That does not sound good.  I hope he's not sleep walking or sleep cooking.  That can be dangerous.
  • I'm assuming the dosage might be too high...

  • I used to take it, and that'll happen if you fight it. He needs to just give in and go to sleep. If he's not fighting it and still can't fall asleep then he should go talk to his dr.

  • I sure hope you have the doctor's phone number?
  • If he's hallucinating, and not sleeping, I would say No, it's not normal. Rather, it is a normal sign that the medication isn't working properly. DH had to go through several sleep aids to help with his insomnia. Some of them had some wierd side effects. I would suggest that he call his doctor before he takes it again.

  • Yeah, I'll have to check. He says that the side affects is slight hallucinations, but not having ever taken Ambien or knew anyone taking it... He's home and I hope he's asleep now. Haven't had a text from him for a little over 10 minutes...

  • I only take a half pill and this happens to me if I try and stay up while I'm on it.  I will write things online, cook food, do my nails (horribly).Once I hallucinated that H was home from work, but when I woke up later and didn't see him I thought he left in the middle of the night and I called him and flipped out on him.  H was like...honey, I'm still at work...I talked to you 30 minutes ago, check your call log.

  • I've never taken it but had a ex who was on it, and if he took it and tried to stay awake to finish a phone call he had some serious mental side effects; hallucination and really random thoughts. Pretty much don't take it until really ready to lay down for the night.
  • That is normal for some. My GBF's Ambien days: - He tried to eat frozen collards out of the freezer, but couldn't get them out, so he left the open container on the floor in the kitchen.- He drove to Krystal in an Ambien-induced state, and on the way home, decided he needed to tape a notebook to his dash, so when he got home, he did. - He drove several times, in fact.My cousin's husband took it one time and she said they had the best sex ever that night, and they'd previously been fighting that day, so she was confused but went with it, and the next day he was back to being mad and didn't remember the night before at all.
  • http://www.drugs.com/ambien.html Some people using this medicine have engaged in activity such as driving, eating, or making phone calls and later having no memory of the activity. If this happens to you, stop taking Ambien and talk with your doctor about another treatment for your sleep disorder. Ambien can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions
  • It's not "normal" but it's not uncommon, either. I had the same reaction, and FI called poison control. They told him they get those calls fairly regularly. You're just supposed to keep an eye on the person and make sure they don't accidentally get hurt. At some point he'll fall asleep, and sleep it off. But no, he shouldn't take it anymore. :)
  • I think he had just taken it when I spoke with him, so it was probably just hitting him when he was talking with me. I think after he sent that last text he probably passed out, but obviously I don't know for sure. I hope so, cause he really needs a good sleep without interruptions.

  • I don't use perscription sleep aids because they're too strong for me, but I do use OTC (like equate) sleep aids. FI thinks I'm absolutely hilarious when I'm falling asleep - you know that asleep, but still awake stage, where you're dreaming, but can still hear what's going on around you? I always talk out loud about my dreams. Usually it's completely nonsense. Either that, or I laugh hysterically.

  • I wouldn't write these side effects off as "he just took it" or "it's his first time". He really needs to talk to a doctor. If it's the first time that he has taken it, there can be other side effects that manifest in the future. If he's conscious and in a mentally impared state, it could lead to him sleep walking (or sleep-driving) and can be very dangerous. He needs to find a sleep aid that makes him actually sleep.

  • Ditto Tide. I had insomnia for three-years and Ambien was my Best Friend.  I'd take it, watch about ten minutes of tv and dose off.  My mom also was prescribed it and it was TERRIBLE for her. She came out of her room and tried to rearrange the entertainment center and kept dropping things.  It totally wigged us out.He needs to go see his doctor pronto - and stop taking the meds!
  • Thanks tidetravel, I will let him know. I'm really not trying to take this lightly as I know it's a serious drug and can mess with a person. I just don't want him to hurt himself (obviously) so thanks for everyone's input and I will talk to him about it when he is awake and more coherent.

  • 1. Why is he taking ambien at 2 in the afternoon? 2. Now I want to try some ambien.

  • My mom did two entire loads of laundry (including a big fluffly red blanket that wasn't supposed to be washed...red fuzz EVERYWHERE) while on Ambien. She only takes half a pill now. Why on earth is your FI taking it at 1 in the afternoon?
  • A friend of mine was on Ambien for a few months.  She stopped taking it when she sleep-called her ex boyfriend to come over for a booty call and he did.  She didn't remember any of it the next day and freaked out when she woke up in bed with him.

  • Yeah, she's also one of those who takes pills for everything.  She gets anxious?  Pill.  Sleepy?  Pill.  Can't sleep?  Pill.

  • I have taken ambien before and I have hallucinated and walked and talked in my sleep, but I used to walk and talk in my sleep anyways, but he may want to lower his dosage.
  • There have been lots of cases of people driving while on ambien.  I was at the doc last week for a sinus infection and the doc said she won't even perscribe it anymore because of the sleep driving.
  • I was able to get off work early and I'm home now. He is sleeping, doesn't appear that he has done anything that I can tell. But I will def keep any eye on him. At first I thought he was just being weird and now I'm glad I posted this cause I had no idea what was normal or not. Thanks ladies! We live in WA state so when he took it, it was about 10:30 our time. FI works a night shift, getting to work at 10 pm and his shift ends at 6 in the morning. He usually doesn't get to sleep till bout 10 am.

  • I took Ambien for a while.  I definitely acted a little weird sometimes if I didn't go to bed right away.  I remember some of the weirdness, but not all of it (Ambien can cause amnesia for the event).  My mom said that one time I had a conversation with her and she made me something to eat and I had absolutely no memory of it.
