bathroom renovation ideas

some of you may have read my thread the other night that we have to redo the master bath in the house we're buying this week (supposedly).  so i've been scouring the net looking for ideas, and i think i've narrowed it down.  we have this 3-d painting we bought on our honeymoon, and i've decided to make it the inspiration:with that in mind, i've decided to go with an underwater sort of theme.  we've decided when we rip out the bathtub we're not going to put in a new tub, just have it be a shower only with a glass door.  and being the lover of mosaics that i am, i'd like to do the shower with something like this, a gradient mosaic pattern that goes from darker to lighter (bottom to top), giving the feeling of deeper water and then going up to the surface.with a shower floor like this:the shower floor would be something like this:i also like this mosaic pattern for the shower walls, with the shower floor solid in the same color as the darkest color here (opinions on which pattern is better?):in fantasyland i'd love to install one of those fancy schmancy spa-like shower fixtures:but in reality, the plumbing required for that would probably be too expensive.  so probably just something like this:

Re: bathroom renovation ideas

• I really like the mosaic tiles in bathrooms.  With that being said I personally like the first one with the blues and brown.  I really like those colors together.
• I love the mosaic tile. I like the colors of the shower and the wall better than the more green color of the bathroom floor shown, but I love the patterns. Tim and I have a shower head like the second on you pictured and it's great. I love being able to remove the shower head and it makes cleaning the shower much easier.
• I think putting in a few of the mid color tiles might help break up the floor, especially since the walls will be mosaic.  It'd be something between the solid and the mosiac floor you put in the post.

• yeah i like the removable shower head, would make washing the doggeh(s) easier.
• That's pretty sweet. Will you be giving your guests snorkels when they come to visit?

• Oh, and I like the white spots on the tile in the first picture, it reminds me of bubbles.
• Ooh!  I have perfect pictures for inspiration.  I hope these work--I don't usually PIP from Facebook. My friend's parents' bathroom:

• I like it! I use to have an amazing "underwater" bathroom planned but my dad never finished the bathroom...
• now that i'm looking at the photos together, if i went with the 2nd pattern for the wall, the floor should have a blend of a couple of the darker colors, like this:
• Yeah, their house is NUTS.  It's crazy cool.  His brother is an architect and designed it for them as a retirement gift to his dad.  He has this whole awesome album of pics of it on FB.

• omg brie, that's perfect!!  thank you for posting those!
• Our bathroom has a pirate theme. Sigh. The perils of moving into HIS house.Anyhoo, detachable shower head + no actual tub = WAY easy time washing dogs. If you have dogs.

• No problem, Jill.  I really like the white tub and accents in that bathroom--IMO, it keeps the room from looking too dark.

• brie are there more pictures of that bathroom you can post?
• Sorry, sorry, I'm still trying to put sigs with names, let alone dogs with names.Anyway, the point remains, if you don't need to have the edge of the tub jammed into your gut to wash the dog, you're ahead of the game.

• Ditto the removable shower head. I miss cleaning the dog with one of those...might have to switch out my current one.
• Those are the only ones in the album of the master bath, unfortunately.  And I'd e-mail the guy for you...but, err, things between us ended on a bit of an awkward/unpleasant note.Still a sweet house, though.

• I think those inspirations are gorgeous, DJ!I miss my FL beach and lighthouse bathroom from my townhouse.  It wouldn't go over well in the cabin to recreate it here.

• right on, understood.rufus is the best doggeh.  we want to get him a sibling, but thanks to the bathroom situation, that'll probably have to be put off a bit.
• I love the idea for inside the shower, but I think mosaics like that in the shower and on the floor would be too busy. Thats just me though. I think a solid floor, matching the tiles or something else, would be easier ont he eyes.
• Not having a full bath master will be bad for selling later since full bath is what people expect and will change the value.  You are also missing out on tub nookie.
• I wish we had done mosaics for the (sorely needed) bathroom renovation we just did on our house in Michigan, but FI's buddy was doing the work for us, and he didn't want him to have to do that.  I think the mosaics are going to look very nice Daff!
• First of all, tub nookie is just asking for a broken hip or UTI and second of all... that actually is a pretty good point MrsE has about the master bath. Buddy and I were looking at houses lately and a full tub in the master bath is a pretty big deal for us, at least.

• TJ, you are so wrong on so many levels but I'll save you the TMI.
• i like in the 1st pic that brie posted, the shower(?) area behind the curved wall has the solid color tiles that match the tiles on the bottom of the wall.  having seen it put together like that, i'm really feeling it. as far as a tub, the upstairs hall bath has one, so it's not like the house will be entirely sans tub.
• Those are so pretty! I think I vote the first pattern, I don't know why but I like the colors better, they seem soothing.  And I also think I would vote a solid floor, but I'm not sure which color.  On another note, what made you name your dog rufus?  I've always wanted to name a dog Rufus Wainwright after the singer, and call him Roofie.  DH doesn't think it's as funny as I do.
