Monogram Etiquette

Hi! I am wondering if you more knowledgeable brides-to-be can advise me on something! I am thinking of doing a monogram for our invitations and stationary that would include both of our first names plus a large "A" (his last name initial). However I've heard it is a no-no to use this before we are actually married, and we should only introduce it in post-ceremony stationary such as thank you cards and menus. What do you ladies think? Thanks!!!

I think it's a little cart before the horse to use the last name monogram before the wedding.What about just doing a pre-wedding one without the A and then the version with it for menus, thanks yous, etc?

Wedding invites do include monograms sometimes, but often they are just the groom's last name single letter monogram or a monogram of the bride and groom's first names. Basically, use it how you want. Tones a brides paint it on the aisle runner (full monogram with new last name) and technically they haven't gotten married yet. Same situation with the invites. It's really your call.

I think this is one piece of advice that can be taken with a grain of salt. How many people are going to get your invite with your names and the new last name initial and say "well, I'm not going to that wedding, they broke the rules"? I put our monogram with a P on it on our unity candle and was planning on using the same monogram on our invites until I changed my design. I think it'll be fine.

Technically, what you have heard is correct.  Before the wedding ceremony (including programs), stick with just your first initials.  As soon as you hear "I now pronounce you husband and wife" you can use your new last initial as well, so menus, thank you notes, etc.  This is one of those etiquette things that I really still agree with, too.  It's not actually your monogram yet -- seems like you'd be asking for bad luck to use it early.

Correct, it is inappropriate to use your married monogram on a wedding invitation (you're not married yet). It is fine to use on post-ceremony things like you mentioned.
