NWR: More College Violence

And this one happened at my (and DH's) Alma Mater.http://theday.com/re.aspx?re=f7411af2-202d-4fd4-8e7d-dd7784c55ef6So sad.  :-(

Re: NWR: More College Violence

• oh my.. That is so sad

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
• I don't understand what people are thinking when they use violence to solve a problem. Since when is stabbing someone a good solution? And did this person stop and think about the consequences for him (the stabber) after the fact? I truly believe that people who do such things have a lower level of thinking and are either 1) unable to consider the consequences, making them dangerous and unfit adults or 2) so rid of morals that they don't care of the consequences.
• that's awful!
• Sarah, I highly doubt the stabber is even a student at UConn.  He may be but historically, when there was trouble on campus, those arrested were not University students.  They either attended other local schools or were there to attend a University event with other students.   If the person isn't a student, s/he may not even see that there's any code outside of a "street code."  UConn has really turned itself around from where it was before I attended.  It's now a school that is not used as a "safety" like it was for many of my HS classmates.  That said, Connecticut has a HUGE amount of crime in its cities.    The "street code" is a huge problem in all of them (Bridgeport, Hartford, New Haven, New London). I also hope that the reason that this person ultimately died isn't due to a lack of medical care.  The hospital local to UConn is infamous for it's inability to treat students.  It's where students are brought for medical emergencies but it's ill-equipped to deal with serious trauma.
• I should have said 'She/he may be.'  I don't want to jump to the immediate conclusion that the stabber had to be a man.
• I'm not assuming the stabber is a student. I am assuming the stabber is just a horrible, awful person. I could describe my thoughts more clearly but just thinking about a person physically harming someone else to such an extent just blows my mind. I can not even comprehend that thinking.
• Miss Sarah, I can't understand it either.  Unfortunately there's a culture of violence that is just too prevalent.
• That's awful Banana! My thoughts are with his friends and family.
• Ugh, and right after their win yesterday too! Not that it matters, but it's just interesting that it happened at that time. So sad.I used to work at the Student Union, some nights until 2am - and was always nervous walking back to my car in the parking garage. I am paranoid to begin with though. And it makes me think it was somewhat planned because of the alarm pull, but you never know. How awful. :(

• You never know ggmae.   In my four years there and living on campus for all of them, I don't recall there ever being a real fire when the fire alarm was going off.   I wouldn't be surprised if there were issues inside and someone either pulled the alarm to try to break up a fight or to just take matters outside.
• That is a really big possibility.I know that UConn isn't known for its violence (um, yet), but it seems that whenever someone like this does occur, it's just awful all-around. Like the sexual assaults on the "Rape Trail" or when a female student was crossing the road in the crosswalk, was hit by a drunk driver and left on the side of the road to die, and the driver took off. I was there for that and it was just so awful. I just don't get it.

• That one was awful too.  The parental cover-up irritated me more than anything.
• Yeah, that element of it made me sick.
