So...our dog is apparently Houdini. We got a crate from Petsmart last week before we got him, and today we come home to find that he has actually bent the metal panel and escaped.  A 20 pound beagle did this to a crate for dogs up to 40 pounds!  So...it's pretty clearly crappy construction.FI just took the crate back to Petsmart and they won't do anything.  The garbage men took the box today and we don't have a receipt.  Any suggestions?  Or are we just out $70? It's less than a week old and we can't use it anymore.

  • Ugh, technically you would need "either or" but any good manager would be able to guess the size and then look up the receipt or give you store credit. You could try going back to the store, get the upc code off the shelf/another box, then ask them to look up the receipt or do an exchange. They can look up receipts in the store (by product upc) up to 13 days after purchase so it's worth a shot.Did you get the Bargain Hound or Icrate? I would call them back and see if you could exchange it for store credit or another crate. I-Crate and Midwest are the better of the brands sold there. BH sucks. If that doesn't work you could always try calling another store. Explain that you threw away the box and lost the receipt but the crate was destroyed within days of purchase. Some managers are nicer than others and you may get a nice one. Or you could always buy a new crate and put the old crate in the box and return that one, but I said nothing...
  • Yeah, it was the Bargain Hound one.  I had no idea which was best, the manager actually recommended it to me.  I know it was the medium size because we were on the border for small/medium everything and he said to go bigger.FI said that they were really busy and there weren't any managers available, so maybe we'll try again.  It's just a pain that it lasted only a week!  Oh well.  Thanks!

I love you Missy. Even though you are not smart enough to take online quizzes to find out really important information. ~cew

  • Aw, Brie! Hadn't he been so well behaved? :(
  • He's a great dog, he is just not into the whole crate thing.  We're only using it temporarily until he's housebroken enough to leave out, and we give him a Kong with peanut butter or a similarly awesome treat every time he goes in, but he is just not a fan.  Beagles are also prone to separation anxiety, which is an issue. But I guess if I'd been caged for the first two years of my life, I'd hate it too. It'll work out once we get the housebreaking thing going a little better!

  • I know a lot of people who swear by crating, and it's really worked for their dogs, so hopefully he gets the hang of it! That really stinks about the store though, that's definitely faulty merchandise. They should have at least given you store credit or something.
  • Yeah, I think he's got some issues with being crated--the vet said his teeth were cracked and chipped from biting at the cage bars in the puppy mill he was rescued from, so it's understandable that he's traumatized.Hey, the cats like the crate though, so it's not a total loss.

  • Yeah, go back and talk to one of the managers. I would switch to the Icrate though. Bargain Hound is the "PetSmart" brand so employees are told to push that one. If he destroyed that I would try the Icrate or Midwest.Maybe crate him while you're home and give him lots of treats and love. Gradually he'll learn that the crate isn't bad and won't freak out over it. Or with the icrate you could get a larger size (they have dividers) and he might feel better.
  • Try contacting the manufacturer of the crate. They may stand behind their product.
