Newspaper announcement

I checked the Just Engaged board and didn't see anything there, and this is really a planning question anyway (plus, I've lurked and everyone here seems really nice, haha). How far in advance should a newspaper announcement typically be placed?

We put one in about 6 months before the wedding.I don't recommend it though.  We got so much junk mail from vendors.

Yeah, I would forgo the public announcement. You get plenty of questions from people without the entire town knowing about it.

Our engagement announcement was in the paper about 3 months after we got engaged and 9 months before the wedding.  I  haven't gotten any junk mail related to the announcement.  I did get a congratulatory call from the realtor I bought my house from but that was it outside of people I know.
