Recs for inexpensive wine for wedding

Hello,I had originally decided on certain wine for our wedding from a local winery. However, since I need to plan to order about 40 bottles (we buy our own and bartender serves it,) I was wondering if anyone had recs for an inexpensive wine (the current one we picked is 9 a bottle) that people think would be nice for a wedding (basic red and white.) Thank you so much!!

Re: Recs for inexpensive wine for wedding

  • Meridian is INCREDIBLE wine and usually sells for less than $10 a bottle. My wino FMIL introduced me to it and she is in the hospitality industry in Napa Valley and knows wines like you would not believe. It's one of her favorite middle of the road, casual, at home wines. Try it! It's definitely one of my favorites. I have no idea why they sell it for the price they do. Good luck!

  • I'm not much of a red wine drinker - when I do, it's usually more expensive bottles that I buy... XOXO, however, is my favourite inexpensive brand of wine to buy right now. I know there is a white and a red. They offer a mixture - I don't drink the red, but the white I buy is $9.99 at the liquor store where I live (Toronto, Canada) - it's a Pinot-Chardonnay. I love it! A popular brand I've seen at weddings which is inexpensive is Two Oceans, a South African brand for $9.99 (in our liquor stores). I think the white is a chardonnay.
  • The Casillero del Diablo collection by Concha y Toro of Chile is generally undervalued in the States. You should be able to find bottles with scores above 88 for around $10-15. That's what we served at our rehearsal dinner.
  • Hello! Red Tree is great - it comes in reds (pinot, cabernet) and whites (pinot and chardonnay). I get it at my liquor store for $8 a bottle. Also, big house red is great too! Also - some boxed wines are great - really cheap! Black Box and Bota Box are yummy - $19.00 for a box, equivalent to 4 bottles of wine! Stay away from Franzia - yuk! Good luck - have fun sampling!!
  • Sohne Reisling...has the sun on it.Relax Reisling, blue bottle
  • Our current favorite is a Spanish Crianza, Condesa de Laganza. Runs around $10 per bottle, but tastes much pricier. I also highly recommend McManis cabernet.
  • hands down what PP suggested- The Casillero del Diablo collection by Concha y Toro of Chile the Cab and Chardonnay are both tremendous, and for the quality, such a good deal!
  • Grocery Outlet has some great wines.  If you have one in your area, you may want to check it out.  They have excellent $5 bottles that sell for up to $20 per bottle elsewhere.  Buy a few bottles, have some friends over for a tasting, decide on which ones you like and then buy what you need in  the next day or so.  If it's good, it will sell quickly.   Pinto Grigio is great for white wine drinkers and Cabernet Sauvignon or Shiraz (my favorite) is a great for the red.  Best wishes!
  • Not sure where you're located, but if Two/Three Buck Chuck is available that's a great way to go. Unless you have guests who are serious wine snobs no one's going to notice ... it's award winning after all :).

  • Charles Shaw (aka three buck chuck) at Trader Joe's was the first thing that popped into my mind. But wine recommendations are going to be tough because they really vary depending on where you live. Out here on the west coast, we have inexpensive wines from Washington, Oregon and California, but if you're in New England, for instance, you probably have some more Finger Lakes wines.A $9 bottle of wine is pretty cheap, especially if you really like it. Do you have a Costco by you? You can probably get a great case discount there. Or a wine store/outlet by you should offer a per-case discount. I wouldn't pay per-bottle for that many bottles...you should be paying a reduced case cost no matter what.
  • Thanks ladies. I didn't think about getting a case discount so that might make it cheaper. I live in Florida so there is no trader joes here, sad!! I am going to do some sampling this weekend :)
  • If you don't know a lot about wine, you could always order based solely on the scores. And you can order cases online and have them shipped to you. We're having cases delivered to Utah for an upcoming ski trip, for example. We didn't want to get stuck purchasing resort-priced low-quality wine when we could have the good stuff delivered. I recommend you look into this for your wedding... Just google "buy wine online" and several sites come up :)
