Another Drinking and Pregnancy Poll

Would you drink a glass of wine every now and then during your pregnancy if the doctors say it's safe? I'm thinking during the second half of the pregnancy...

Not in the first tri, but if my doctor was okay with it, I'd do it once in a while in the second and third.

No. Not necessarily out of fear for the baby. Mainly becuase I don't drink that much anyway and wouldn't crave it or feel like I wanted it.

I wouldn't but only because I don't think I've ever had just one glass of wine in my entire life... self-control fail.

I would.  I don't think a couple of ounces would hurt occasionally.  I inadvertently drank a little bit before I knew I was pregnant.

I'd actually be more concerned about drinking and breast feeding. I don't want a drunk baby.I'd have a few sips in the 3rd trimester at home (in public I'd get glared at) and only if FI didn't freak out about it.

Probably.  You don't share a bloodstream for the first 6 weeks, and I think doctors say an occasional glass is okay in the 3rd tri.Ask this over on the bump and they'll burn you at the stake.

My mom drank occasionally and smoked regularly when she was pregnant with my sister and me. We turned out fine. Well, sort of. It shocked me when she told me that she smoked and drank with me. She said that her dr. said it was fine, which tells me how far we've come in 32 years.

How weird, I was just thinking about this earlier. I don't think FI would let me, but I wouldn't have a problem doing it during the second and third tri. I'd be fine during the entire 9 months, but I can't handle not having any wine during the entire pregnancy and breastfeeding.

I would be okay with it, but probably won't.  Who knows what will come up in the future, though.

To answer my own poll, I would as long as the doctor's okay with it. I'm not sure about breastfeeding, though. Is it safe then?

It's best to drink right after you feed so that it has the most time to go through your system.  Only a small percentage gets excreted in your milk and I *think* there are test strips you can get to test it before you feed.

I didn't with any of my pregnancies.  It's only the last couple of years that the doctors are back to saying that a glass here and there won't bother the baby.  When I was pregnant it was definitely not the thing to be doing.Once my kids were here though,  a small glass of sherry before the last feeding before bedtime did wonders some nights!

I probably won't but then again I don't really drink that often as it is. It more for public perception than personal beliefs of how bad it is for the baby.

I've been watching Mad Men and it's amazing to see how much they drank and smoked during pregnancy back then! So a little bit can't hurt

No I would not. My lifecycles nutrition text book says it is not good to drink while pregnant. Why chance hurting your baby?

Maybe--it would probably depend on the circumstance.  If the doctor said it was okay and I was celebrating something, then maybe. That said, my younger brother was born in April (22 years ago)...that New Year's my mom and a friend of hers (who was also pregnant, her daughter was born Jan 10th) split a bottle of champagne...probably not great

cew that is effed up.  I probably won't drink, just because I have the same issue as kati, I rarely just have one drink and don't really see the point of it (not a wine person).  And I don't drink as often as I used to, so I doubt I'd miss it that much.  But I don't judge those that do.  Clearly binge drinking is a terrible idea, but I'd trust the doctor if they say it's safe to have a couple of ounces.

Yes, I would.  Alcohol in moderation can be OK during pregnancy.

If you drink, you should pump and then feed. Again, this is what I just learned in my nutrition class. I am def. not trying to promote my future profession, but from I am learning, you guys should talk to a registered dietitian who would know about this stuff. A RD actually know more than a dr. when it come to nutirition. They are trying to pass something in congress to where an RD can only give this type of nutritional advice. I wonder if Dudley knows about this? Hmmm

I probably would. I don't think I'd really care so much what "my" doctor says as what the research on the whole says. From my understanding (not having done any extensive research), it's fine to have an occasional drink, but if I were pregnant, I'd do a lot more research on it just to be sure I felt comfortable with that decision.

What my book says, "Alcohol ingested by a pregnant woamn readily passes through the placenta to the fetus where it can interrupt normal growth and development. Adverse effects of alcohol intake during preg. are mild or undetectable when intakes are low or when intake exsists or if infrequent. However, because no clear safe level of alcohol intake has been identified, it is strongly advised that women who are pg. do not drink. In nutero alcohol exposure during the first, critical months of pg. may inpair organ development." Nutrition Through Lifecycle- Judith E Brown.So I guess you could drink small amounts but why chance problems?

I love drinking, but I dont care what the doctor says. I would never drink while pregnant or breast feeding. I have heard of having a little bit of wine was ok, but none for me thanx! I dont believe when dr say that. My friend was pregnant and her doctor told her she can smoke occasionally. Her baby turned out fine. She didnt smoke much, but still I think its very wrong. I wouldnt def not go to that doctor!
