Heading to New York!!

Ok so in about 3 weeks I'm going to New York for a weekend.  I'll be arriving on Friday about midday and leaving Sunday, early afternoon.  This is only my second time going ever and I would like to do some fun stuff.  Any recommendations (obviously keeping in mind the short stay)??

Re: Heading to New York!!

  • I've only been to NY once and it was for a very short trip.  We did the hop on-hop off bus trip.  We saw a lot of the city and if we wanted to, we could get off and see the attraction more (ie, we got off at Central Park and walked around, then got on another bus for the rest of the tour).

  • gkb, I did the same thing.  I was only there for a day bus trip.  There is so much that I want to see and I'm going with NO KIDS wahoo!! It's just a girls trip so I want to do things that I wouldn't do with Mr. P or the kids.
  • The thing I wanted to do that we didn't have time for was go to Macy's and shop.  Their shoe department is 2 floors!!

  • That sounds like so much fun! We went for New Year's Eve 2008 and I have been wanting to go back ever since. If you like pizza, you should try Angelo's which is located right next to the Ed Sullivan theater. It was amazing and reasonably priced- we ate there twice during our trip. We went to the top of the Empire State Building at night and did the audio tour. I also enjoyed taking the ferry out to the Statue of Liberty.Have an incredible time!!
  • I definitely want to do the Statue of Liberty, I've been to Macy's and FAO Schwartz (to play the floor piano) and also to the big Toys R Us with the ferris wheel.  I think we might go ice skating one evening since they've already put the ice down.
  • Typical Attractions:Empire State BuildingCircle Line TourMacy'sCentral Park (not as pretty this time of year though)Times Square (and the gazillion shops there...)Cool Things:Ripley's Believe it or Not (in times square)Madame Tusseau's Wax Museum (next to times square hilton - very cool, you can take pictures with them)Catch a Show:In the Heights is AMAZING, loved it!Wicked is also AMAZING, and more a "typical" broadway showFood:Ellen's Stardust Diner (50s style, and they sing)John's Pizza (near times square, a converted church to pizza place)Serendipity (from the movie, you MUST get the frozen hot chocolate, its to die for!)Good luck and let me know what you think of it!
  • Where are you staying, and what are you looking to do?

  • We are staying in the Financial District.  My friend just bought a condo there.
  • I'm sure your friend would have good ideas.  But since your trip is short and you'll be downtown, I would maybe save the midtown stuff for next trip?  There's so much great stuff downtown that is much more New York than the stuff that only tourists go to.  I'd walk around the Village (East, Greenwich, and West), Soho, Meatpacking, and Lower East Side.  They're all really different neighborhoods with very different feels.  Great shopping, If you like Italian food, I would highly recommend Frank in the East Village or Malatesta or Piccolo Angolo in the West Village.  All are delicious and cheap.  And go to Lombardi's if you want to go to the oldest pizzeria in the country; Keste, Co. or Motorino if you want to experience the new Neopolitan pizza craze in NYC; or Joe's if you're in a hurry and want one of NY's best slices.  John's (which someone else recommended) has a location on Bleecker Street which is its older location.
