Exercising at Home

Re: Exercising at Home

  • Pirata, I get that about the knees and the machines, but .... I must be effed up or doing something wrong. My knees ALWAYS hurt worse on the elliptical more than the treadmill - go figure. Vogt - no lie. I get it about the webcam - they're funky to me; but hey - it's an idea! I don't like weighing with people/losing weight either (I was always SOOOO much heavier than everyone else, that when we'd go to WW, I'd lose 5 lbs a week, and my friend would lose 1/2 lb - she'd get mad - well duh; I've got a gazillion to lose; you've got 40).  Exercise, I don't mind so much. Books on tape, iPod (set a number of songs to listen to before you stop exercising), movie/Tv show to watch while you work out, book to read (if you're doing machine).

Do not mess in the affairs of dinosaurs because you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.
I love you Missy. Even though you are not smart enough to take online quizzes to find out really important information. ~cew
  • J - it's mostly about wanting to get home, even if I was staying in town. Being home for only an hour or two a night (on good nights) is not healthy for me. I need some down time and time to keep up the house. It's a big house, it takes a lot of work, unfortunately.I know myself well enough to know that even if I spent a bunch of money on a gym membership thinking it would motivate me, it would go to waste. I need that hour or two of feeling comfortable at home and away from the bad feelings I get when I'm in the city. And now I sound like a nut :)

  • I LOVED doing the Firm when I wasn't going to the gym!
  • Do you get FitTV through your cable company?  I like doing their workouts because they are always different.  p90x is a very hard workout.  It is for the hardcore athlete.  I would recommend, machine wise, an elliptical or a treadmill that has present programs.  I find if I put it in front of a TV, I will workout for an entire show and not even know it!  Good luck!PS--Don't forget to change your diet too!
  • Jillian Michaels has some great work out videos on DVD, try the 30 day shred. That works great! Makes your energy sky! I would do this before getting any expensive machine. Good luck!!
  • oh to add, her work out isnt boring, IMO. I never had to loose weight or work out before I did Jillians workouts and I loved it! Its only like 30 mins, so its high energy and quick and effective.
  • Get a stripper pole for the house...seriously, buy a few DVDs, learn spins and holds online - it doesn't need to be used as any sexy situation for your man (unless you want ;)) but I have been pole dancing (at home, not making money - not that thats a bad profession, just saying) for years and its a fantastic work out, and its fun - especially if you get some girls together for pole dance nights. Also, I work at a gym and I know about a million great home workouts. I will however, still recommend that you get outside to work out at least twice a week, fresh air and sun shine are amazing for us!! Bundle up and go for those walks, or do your yoga outside. As for inside, some basics...save your money...Go to Walmart and buy a small pilates ball for 6 bucks and use that for your abs. run up and down your steps as many times as you can in a row and build up every day. ALWAYS stretch after a work out - it helps retain an extra 19% of the muscle mass you build up while working out. Remember to tone up - low weight, lots of reps!
  • If you get a machine, I would suggest an elliptical...However since you have Wii Fit, you can get wii fit plus for $20...it has more exercises than the original...it also has targeted routines that you can combine or you can set up and save your own routines...no more going in and out of each exercise...Even better though is EA Sports Active, it has a ton of routines of differing lengths and intensities so you won't get bored...you can choose which routine to do everyday or do the 30 day challenge which will spit out a new routine everyday, it is two days on, one day off...
  • Late to the thread, but if you can't walk outside, then an elliptical or recumbent bike are good (I also have a treadmill but hardly use it). I lost 85 lbs on Weight Watchers, and the first 60 was through walking.  Sometimes it's hard to get motivated to exercise, but anyone can walk.  Even if I didn't feel like it, I told myself I'd just go out for 20 minutes or so.  Well, once you get out there, of course you usually do more. Than I got a recumbent bike to put in front of the TV.  Again, it's easy exercise, so I could make myself do it.  Then I got the elliptical, and that is a workout!  Even now, on the days I don't want to exercise, I tell myself to just do a couple minutes on the elliptical, and then I can switch to the bike (or treadmill, but to me that's harder than the bike).  Once you get started, you'll be surprised that you'll usually keep going!  The other night, I didn't want to work out, so I told myself I just had to do 15 minutes.  I ended up working out for 85 minutes.  The key is tell yourself, "I can do this for even a few minutes."  And if that's all it is, well, at least you did it. For me, the TV makes a huge difference... I work out a lot more when there's something good on TV.
  • As long as you do one thing a day, it doesn't matter what you use. Since you have several tapes already just start with the one in front today (put it at the end when you're done) & do the next one tomorrow & the next one the day after & so on until you are back at the first one. Then do it again. Shoveling snow counts as exercise! Make love twice a day if you can, once in the a.m. & once in the p.m. — twice a day counts as exercise! Also, don't drink anything but water. I lost 11 pounds over 4 months with this one change. Caffeine pills help get rid of the headache.
  • Are you doing anything to change your diet?  I know low carb diets are "out of fashion" and all, but they really do work.  Maybe you could cut out sugar and processed products if you aren't all about the low carb.  My fiance and I are on Atkins and have both lost about 10 pounds with not a ton of exercise.  We usually just go on walks around the neighborhood or play boxing and tennis on the Wii.   It's a good confidence booster to see my pants getting more and more baggy and it actually makes me want to exercise more so that I can lose more!
  • Did anyone mention Dance Dance Revolution (you know, that game where you step on the arrows in time to music...its a PS2 game)?  It takes a minute to get the hang of, but is quite fun and is more of a workout than you might think.  I have issues working out to tapes, but if I trick myself into playing a video game it seems to work.
  • A1: I would buy the elliptical, it works out the whole body and it is easy to lose weight with just 30min-1hour a day. A2: I usually watch television while working out so I do not get bored, and when there is no good TV on I BLAST some high-tempo music. I think having a machine in the home will do wonders to motivate you, simply because the reminder to exercise is ALWAYS right there. Good luck!

  • I get netflix DVDs!  You can watch movies on the cardio equipment and order different workout DVDs.   Also, have you tried the Women's Health wedding workout DVD or the Buff Brides DVD?  They divide workouts into shorter segments that work if you are pressed for time...but for what it's worth, I think I'm Billy Blanks' biggest fan in terms of being challenged.Also...have you tried the little metal ice walking things you can put on the bottom of your shoes to walk/run?  LL Bean has some...also, my Fiance and I have a blast snowshoeing together!  good luck!
