WR, sorry: Venue v. colors

I always think of the stupidest questions when I'm trying to get to sleep at night. Anyway. How closely did you work with the colors at your venue? I know things definitely don't have to match, but did you keep things within a certain spectrum (warm v. cool tones, etc.)?I ask because our venue is all browns, creams, and light yellows... Very warm and earth-toned. I've bought a bunch of milk glass vases (very white) for the centerpieces, and I'm wondering if it would look weird. The tables are dark brown, and we're not planning on doing linens. I could probably paint the vases to make them cream, but I have no idea if it's worth it. Our colors are raspberry, tangerine, and goldenrod.

Re: WR, sorry: Venue v. colors

• Your colors will be fine, Im imagining it in my head and it will look just fine!
• Sounds pretty! Personally, I wouldn't bother with painting the vases unless it's under flourescent light, where the difference in stark white and cream would be totally obvious.  I'm assuming they have more mood appropriate lighting than flourescents though.  I wouldn't paint, but I'm a lazyass.

• I think the white vases will pop nicely on all those warm colors. To answer your question, I did kind of fit in with the colors of my venue, but really only because they were colors I loved - the whole house was in warm burgundies, golds, and greens, plus it was fall, so it all fit together really well. We used some brighter shades for centerpieces and they popped really well on the darker backdrop of the venue.
• I didn't consider the venue colors at all.  I really have no idea what color the carpet or walls were and didn't consider it in the planning.  You dress the tables and chairs to match your wedding anyway and that's the main focus. Now if it were something extreme, like one big purple wall that is the focus of the room, okay I would probably work with that.  But if it's just general tones that don't stick out, I would go with whatever colors I wanted and not worry about it.

• I assume the lights will be sort of low, anyway. I'm sure no one will notice the carpet. And I don't consider if wood really works with the color scheme. It's just wood. It's a neutral. I think it will be fine!

• It looks good in my head, too. I didn't pick my colors to match the venue.  We actually had our colors pretty much decided on before we chose our venue.

• I picked colors before picking a venue...it happens that the reception space is decorated in largely the same colors, so now I'm wondering if it will be burgundy overload.I think what you're doing will look great.
• We picked colors before venue. It just happened to work out b/c all we had to decorate were the tables. We weren't allowed to tape/staple/glue anything to the ceilings/walls because it was an historic venue. I think your colors work just fine. I wouldn't worry about that too much or you'll drive yourself crazy.
• That makes sense. The lights are going to be pretty low and we'll have a bunch of candles scattered throughout, so I think you're right that it'll be ok. Everything doesn't need to be perfect, but I have enough time that I can work out little details if they'll make a big difference.
• Sounds very pretty.

• I also ignored the venue colors. It was in a hotel and you know they're sometimes decorated with ornate carpets. We had the lights dimmed and did spot lighting which took your attention away from the carpet. I didn't even notice the venue colors.
• I took the venue's colors into mind when I chose colors. I think it makes more sense - and looks better, honestly - to work with the venue in terms of colors rather than against it. I'm very picky, so I could never just ignore the venue's colors and assume that my decor would overpower it. But I also don't agree with the whole "no one will notice the hotel chairs" argument, either... So take my opinion with a grain of salt ;) In your case, I think that the white vases sound really nice. And your venue is beautiful ;) I think the color scheme you've described fits really well there. You said you aren't doing linens, but what color are the napkins going to be?
• Oh, and lighting can solve any color issues ;)
• Hm, I hadn't thought about the napkin colors! They have brown ones in stock, but I wouldn't mind renting them. What do you think would work?
• If the brown ones are nice, you could use those. But they're not going to pop against the table, unless you place them on chargers. Take a look at my tables in my bio for a FREE way to have chargers - basically, extra white plates from the kitchen. That would look nice. Or you could rent napkins in one of your colors. I still think placing them over "charger plates" would look good - plus it will tie into your white vases, assuming the plates are white. But I'm biased ;)
• Ooh, I really like that idea! Your wedding is gorgeous, btw :)Confession: I didn't know what charger plates were until right now... hehe.
• Personally, I might do goldenrod for the napkins. I'm picturing raspberry and tangerine as the more dominant colors (BM dresses, flowers), with goldenrod accents (napkins, accent flowers, ribbons). It seems very pretty in my head!

• Thanks! Glad you like the idea ;) I think it looks better to have something at each place setting besides just a napkin... Your venue should be able to do this for you for free - they should have the extra plates. Logistics: When they start serving, they'll swap out the "chargers" for plates with food on them ;)
• I didn't know about chargers until TK either. Then I had a huge conversation about them with my mom a few weeks ago because she wants to buy herself some for the holidays. I'm glad I figured it out literally days before that conversation. I'm just using the white linens my venue provides, I think, even though I can rent through them. If you want to save money, and they have neutral colors (white?) just use their napkins.

• Only in the sense that I saw pictures of other weddings at the same venue and hated the colour schemes.  Somehow stark white and bright fucia don't sit that well with the industrial / old wood space.  Maybe it's the lighting as well, but creme tones seemed too look so warm and inviting while the white looked like junk.
