DJ for Two?

Okay, I'm exaggerating, but at what point does a DJ seem over-the-top for a small wedding? There are about 70 people on our guest list and there might be around 30 or 40 people there since it's a DW. Would a DJ seem overwhelming? I know people will want to dance, but not everyone. The reception space is fairly intimate as well. We don't have space for a band, so that's not really an option. Any ideas? Thanks! :D

Re: DJ for Two?

  • We had 50 people show and used an iPod. It worked out well. People loved our music selection and we saved money. Look up the ion Tailgater. That's the system we used and plan on using it over & over. Sound is great.
  • dependsdo you need your DJ to be the emcee or do you have  a DOC for that?  if you don't "need" the DJ, you could do ipod

  • We had around 55 people at our wedding, and we had a DJ. Not everyone danced, but when we did we had a blast. If it's in the budget, go for it, but I've also seen people do the whole "iPod reception" and have had it work out well too - as long as you have someone willing to troubleshoot/alter playlists if necessary.
  • I think it's fine to have DJ.  It will be nice to have some good tunes playing even if not everyone wants to dance.  And I think a DJ is a lot better/easier than using an iPod or whatever.  Also, your dog is WAY too cute.
  • I really want to steal your dog.

  • Thanks for the Coconutty compliments! :) (She says "Thankx" too!) We thought about the iPod reception as well. But it's good to hear that some of you have had small weddings with DJs as well and that it didn't feel obnoxious. :) We will not have a DOC, so it might be nice to have a DJ there to emcee as well. I guess I should start thinking about this then. I hope I haven't waited too long.

  • Honestly, our reception was so laid back, everyone took turns "announcing" whatever was needed. I even did some announcing.
  • Scoetto, that's a really good idea. Our reception will be really laid back as well... not hiring a DJ will save a lot of money as well. Something to think about!

  • On our HM in Jamaica, there was a wedding at the resort; it seemed to have about 20-30 people and they had a DJ. He announced when the couple was arriving in the courtyard and every so often you could hear him announce something.
  • It's a money saver if you already have an iPod. The Tailgater we got was on sale for 150 maybe? SO yeah. Way cheaper than a DJ. Everyone had a nice fun relaxing time at our reception - which was what we wanted.
  • We had a DW with 60 guests and had a live band, a DJ, and a mariachi group. Not all playing at the same time ;) That's a lot, but it wasn't too much for our small group. Definitely get the DJ.
  • Thanks Expat! I really appreciate your advice. :)

  • No problem :) We were actually really worried that people wouldn't dance because it was a small group. We'd never been to a wedding smaller than ours before, so it was hard to imagine... But a small group can be just as fun, and I think the music really helps. Good luck!
