I'm sure this has been posted before, but I couldn't find it. I'm having an argument with my FI about the proper time to cash a check. We got a few "no" rsvps back with a check as a gift. I thought we were supposed to cash them now, so people know we got it, and can balance their checkbooks, and we are to send the thank you right away. He insists we have to wait til after the wedding. We've been holding them 2wks now. Help me P&E

You should cash them ASAP so that the giver can balance his/her checkbook.

Cash them now and send Thank Yous now so that people can balance their checkbooks.  However, leave the money in your account until after the wedding.  Do not use it before.

Cash it now.  I'd be really annoyed if I wrote someone a check & they waited 2 weeks to cash it.

Check the date on the check and cash it now if it is current. If they wanted you to cash the check after the wedding they would date it as such.I would be really pissed if I wrote a check to someone and they randomly cashed it weeks or months later. People have very tight budgets these days and can't afford an over draft because someone didn't cash a check when they expected.

Thanks, my thoughts exactly. I was positive that's what was expected of us, but I wanted the written proof (you girls) to show him because he keeps insisting he's right.
