Destination wedding: no one will return my e-mails!

I'm trying to plan a wedding in Mexico. Because it's just my fiancee and I and our parents going, I've already booked rooms at a resort. The resort has an entire department devoted to weddings. Despite that, I have sent e-mails to the FIVE different e-mail addresses I have found, and no one has returned a single e-mail in over a week. I even called this morning and talked to someone in the planning department. She gave me another e-mail address and said she'd confirm right away when she received my e-mail. She never confirmed.I'm so frustrated. Has anyone else ever done a destination wedding and experienced a similar problem? Do you have any advice for how to make plans from so far away? Should I just get a planner to go deal with all of this for me?

Re: Destination wedding: no one will return my e-mails!

  • I haven't planned a wedding in Mexico, but I've been there many times.  It seems like everything operates on a different, much more laid back time schedule.  If it's an emergency, I would just call.  Otherwise, try to relax and give them a couple of weeks (although I know it's frustrating at times).

  • I would just do business via phone and fax if e-mail is not a good way to communicate with the venue. Maybe have one of them e-mail you something to see if you receive it.
  • Since they don't answer emails, I would recommend all correspondence go through phone.
  • There should be a planner at your resort that will help you with this. I'm assuming it's one of the people that you are trying to email. I have never had any issues with my resort (they have made it super easy), but I would suggest posting this on the Destination Weddings board also. Not many of us on here are destination brides.

  • Have you checked your Spam file.  Maybe they are emailing you but it is not going in your inbox.  Just a thought.
  • Have you checked your Junk Mail folder?   I found some of my email end up there. Anyway, I would give the person you spoke to until tomorrow to respond and then call them if you do not hear anything.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • resorts in mexico (cancun?) are notorious for this...first, call and get the name of the general manager and try through him/her...you'll do best if you have someone who can communicate in spanish.second...this is my personal opinion...i would get married by a jop here first...then have the ceremony there...if you think not getting a email within a week is bad, try not getting a marriage certificate in close to a year.on the positive side, you have alot of time...they do weddings multiple times a week at most resorts there and are experienced....however, everything is on mexican time...which is very frustrating for americans.
  • How can I help? I live in Mexico :)

  • @mrs.jesse: This is kind of the impression I'm getting! I've got two 400-minute calling cards, so I'm hoping that from here on out I can try to deal as much as possible via phone. Doesn't help though when I call and they go, "What's your e-mail address?" I'm going to keep trying, though! And it *is* really small which is why I feel silly even asking about a planner, but I wonder if a person there actually in person, it might not be useful in getting what little I need done, done.@dianenjnj: We are already planning to get married by a JP here in Oregon. I don't want to have to worry about a lot of paperwork and stuff while I'm down there.@ExpatPumpkin: Know anybody in Puerto Vallarta? ;)Thanks for all your help guys, and I will take this over to the Destination Wedding board. I didn't know there was one! Thanks!- Katie
