the swine herp... FI has it

And my doctor is refusing to give me preventative tamiflu.  I could get tamiflu if I went to urgent care, but I don't want to infect others.  Harumph.Send healthy vibes my way, please! The likelihood of me getting it also is unfortunately high.

  • I had it for 3 weeks and H didn't get it. If you have two bathrooms, use separate ones. Sleep in separate rooms. Don't share drinks, obviously. Make sure he covers his coughs and sneezes, throws out his own tissues, washes glasses etc.Be very careful about touching your face, and washing your hands often. It's entirely possible that you won't get it. I'll be wishing you the best!

  • Oh no!  Does your county have any vaccine clinics going on?  I just called our health department and they have clinics for a couple hours once a week for anyone that wants the H1N1 vaccine.  DH didn't want to get one, but I asked him to simply because IF he gets it, it will inevidably be at the same time I go into labor, and then he wouldn't be allowed into the hospital.

  • THanks for well wishes!  I've been pretty good about washing hands and dishes and stuff, and the doctor gave us both masks today.  I'm also thinking I'll sleep in the living room tonight.Hopefully, I won't get it, but the doctor today was not optimistic for my chances.

  • why won't your doctor give you tamiflu?

  • Hmm. I don't know if there are any clinics nearby that are giving out H1N1 yet.  I know my university won't have the vaccine available until January. Also, isn't the H1N1 vaccine like the normal flu where it takes 10 days to become effective?

  • MissLeah: They said they are only giving out tamiflu to people with asthma or other underlying medical conditions.  Apparently they missed the memo that the majority of people hospitalized with swine flu were young and previously healthy.

  • Our grocery store pharamacies are giving it out (and Walgreen's) - maybe check into that. Leah - in our county, they won't give you Tamiflu unless you're at a high risk for complications (pregnancy, breathing issues, etc.) Some places just don't have the abundance that is necessary for everyone who is getting it. They wouldn't give it to H (FI at the time) even though we were 2 weeks before our wedding.

  • Well, I had it and was with my whole family on vacation in a 2 bedroom condo and no one else got it.  My mom got a little 2-day cold and H got a sinus infection, but no one got the pig flu. GL!  Ditto everyone else on trying to stay away from his germs!
  • Yes, it's too late for the vaccine to prevent you from getting it form your FI.

  • Well, I'm glad to hear that other people haven't gotten sick from being near those with The Swine. I'm hopeful now! Vogt: thanks for all the tips.  I asked the pharmacist when I picked up the prescription for FI, but they shot me down.

  • Dang, that stinks Noelle! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.Maybe start drinking orange juice now! :)

  • As all the others said, basic hygienic precautions. Tamiflu is nasty stuff, you don't want to take it prematurely if you dont really need to plus it's in short supply. If you start to feel like you're getting sick immediately go to the doc and get started. Best wishes for no piggy flu for you!

  • drink lots of Emergen-C!! I live by that stuff. GL
  • I've had the swine flu for just about a week now; the tamiflu is only effective if taken within the first 24-48 hours of exposure.Like pp have said, sleep separately, don't eat/drink together, don't share towels or linens of any kind and if you can go stay somewhere until his fever breaks for good, I'd say do it - that's the time he's contagious. My fever finally broke after 5 days and tomorrow, the cleaning crew is coming over, I feel like I'm in a sick house and I hate it!  The cough has absolutely been the worst part.Stay well!
