Pizza Buffet....

So, my fiance and I have to basically narrow down our choices on our catering this month. I for one HATE normal wedding food. I've been waiting to go to a wedding that had something different. Not the normal dry chicken dish or salty beef dish. Maybe its just my area, but every wedding i've been to I've left and gone straight home to have a sandwich. Anyway, thats not the point. FI brought up a Pizza buffet last night and i had to see what thoughts were on this. A "gourmet" pizza buffet with cool diff types of pizza as well as a cheese pizza for normies (like me! Im an all cheese kind of gal). Luckily our catering company is italian based and they make a mean pizza so this could very well be done. Our wedding is at 2pm and I figure a pizza buffet could allow people to have as much as they want or as little as they want. I (if I actually did this) would assume I'd have a salad area and possibly a small pasta bar too. Weird and cheap looking or neat and yummy?

Re: Pizza Buffet....

  • Sounds like fun. Pizza's pretty informal, though. So make sure the rest of your wedding is casual enough (laid back venue, clothes, etc.) for this to work. If not, you could consider this as one of several buffet stations maybe?
  • Sounds great to me!

  • That sounds great, I'd be happy with a pizza buffet.
  • I love pizza! Sounds like a great idea.

  • I think it would be cool if you were having a relatively laid-back wedding in your backyard or a casual venue. But if you're in a cathedral veil in a fancy church with a country club reception, I'd think it was weird.  I don't want to put on a nice cocktail dress to eat pizza.

  • If I saw this in a fancy ballroom, I would probably think it was a little strange. I would enjoy the food still though, just think it was a little out of place in a more formal setting. At a more casual venue, I think it would be awesome though.

  • I don't really eat pizza, but I could throw down on a salad or some pasta in that situation. I think it sounds like a pretty cool idea.

  • Yeah the ceremony, reception, and everything included is pretty laid back. I want it to be fun, and pretty informal. Basically an afternoon get together after our outdoor ceremony.
  • Definitely agree with pp that it should match the overall atmosphere of the reception.  I, personally, would be happy with this, I love pizza.  But, sometimes when the meal question is brought up on here people mention the guests who won't be satisfied unless they get a plate of meat, or those with dietary needs for whom a carb-laden meal would not be possible, etc.  So, just make sure you've got your bases covered.
  • I think pizza, pasta and salad at a casual reception sounds great.

  • As long as the rest of the affair is pretty laid-back, then, I'd think it was awesome.  I do think you should supplement it with a salad bar and pasta bar, though.  But otherwise, I'd be a happy camper!

  • My DH would love you.  My older relatives would not be too happy.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I like it! But definitely do a few salads, or the pasta station too. Just like not everyone likes wedding chicken, no everyone will want pizza. Maybe do an Italian theme, and have tiramisu and coffee with biscotti as well.

  • I've gotta agree with whoever said their FI would love you, but older family members would not.

  • OP could  you add a lasagna or two for the older crowd who might prefer "traditional" food over pizza?

  • I'd def include the pasta station and a salad station to balance it out, but I love the idea!
  • We had a gourmet pizza buffet, but it was served as the midnight snack, not as the meal. It was a hit ;)
  • Thanks for all the responses! I would def add a lasagna and/or pasta station. I would also have a salad station too. I think ya'll just helped me pick out my reception food! Thanks! :) FI is going to be THRILLED! :)
  • Sounds yummy!  Both me and my FI would love it.
  • The last wedding I went to had a pizza buffet, as well as flat breads and antipasto. Looked great and was a hit. Also keep in mind that a lot of people are gluten free and some are dairy free, so maybe look at having gluten free bases and some cheeseless ones? Definatly have a salad and pasta bar too.
  • I went to a reception once with a pizza buffet and it was awesome!!!!  I still crave that pizza all the time and it was years ago.
2 of us- a bunch of you! Celebrating the whole night through!
