Re: just because

  • I would be extremely offended.
  • I would report him to his department head but I dont take racism/xenophobia/sexism lightly
  • I would have walked out of class. Then filed a complaint with the Dean's office. If he's tenured, there might not be much they can do, but at least it would be on record. And it would have proved a point during class.

  • I would brush it off and continue knotting.

  • I don't know anyone that gives a crap about baseball anymore.

  • I get the wrong country remark.  I say that to my GM who is from France, my friend from Spain and my other friend from Austria.  Let's face it baseball is pretty American and even then Americans do not care about it. The wrong sex... well my post below tells you I'm into baseball.  I would be offended about that one.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Definitely offended if something like that was said to me. WTF, there are plenty of african people in baseball, and tons of women enjoy watching it. I'd actually report that to your school.

  • I think your professor is a jerk.  And I'd be happy to indicate that on the end-of-semester anonymous evaluation my university used to do.

  • yeah I rolled my eyes and just answered the question he asked me.. this professor has already irritated me today.. he was correcting a classmates grammar (this is a financial reporting class)and he says you sound like english is your first language so I'll hold you responsible for your grammar, some folks here (motioning to some people in the class) don't have english as their first language so I can't blame them
  • WHAT?! Complain to the chair of the department ASAP

  • I hope you're not still sitting in that classroom.
  • I would most likely report this professor to the dean.  I don't take crap like that lightly.
  • What a douche.1. I'm African2. I'm a chickI like baseball.
    image
  • That was pretty racist and sexist of your professor, but honestly, if I was lecturing and you were looking at the Knot, or FB, or anything else, I would be so mad. It's really disrespectful to your professor to be doing that.

  • And at any rate, you're PAYING to be there no? If you wanted to be watching the game on your laptop, who is he to stop you?
    image
  • @ sarah0725 - he was asking about the game because he has it up minimized on his screen while teaching ! He is watching while he's teaching.. go figure
  • I still don't think it's okay. I'm a TA, and when I teach sections and students are texting or playing on their laptops instead of paying attention, it's really distracting to me. I wouldn't make a habit of doing this no matter what your professor is doing. And honestly, he called you out for doing something other than taking notes on your computer, and you are doing something else, just not the something else he thought you were doing.

  • I would send an email to the department head. Especially if this wasn't the first time he'd made comments like this. I'd probably also ask to switch out of his section. I'd be afraid it would be reflected on my grade.
  • Yes, but there's no reason for him to be racist or sexist about it.
  • ok sarah I used to TA too and I understand what you're saying. I literally was just opened one post (not trying to justify my not paying attention though ) and he was asking because he wanted to know what I though about the game not that he was calling me out for not paying attention because he then turned to a Caucasian guy with whom he briefly discussed the game.
  • Meh, if the professor has an issue with students on their computers, he/she should just kick them out of the classroom. Making sexist comments doesn't solve anything.
  • he wants us to have our computers in class ...
  • and he says you sound like english is your first language so I'll hold you responsible for your grammar,And with this, I'd go to the chair of the department, the dean of that academic college, etc.  It's clear he's not interested in treating people equally.  I can't imagine he's interested in grading equally.

  • If you complain, you might not want to mention the part about the fact that you were surfing the web in class... they definitely wouldn't listen to your complaint after that. Also, these types of things don't tend to go all that far in departments, especially if the professor has tenure. We have one prof in ours who inspires at least one undergrad mutiny per year because of his incomprehensible lectures, but he hasn't been removed or censured at all.

  • I mean an issue with people being distracted on them. When I was in law school, everyone had a computer in class. If you got caught surfing the internet, they kicked you out.
  • Also, these types of things don't tend to go all that far in departments, especially if the professor has tenure.True. I had a teacher last semester give me a C for missing one day of class, despite the fact that it was an emergency and I had a doctor's note. I reported it (it wasn't in her syllabus that that was allowed) and it went nowhere.

  • Sarah, we had a prof who taught a lecture every semester about the versatility of the word fuuck, proclaiming it the most versatile word in the English language.  He did this in the Bible belt.  In a journalism/mass comm department.  Students complained a lot, and nothing ever happened.  They determined that offensive content in class was acceptable.  We did have a professor who was reprimanded/demoted for being offensive to students, similar to this guy.  The board viewed it differently.

  • Considering all the crap he's trying to get away with, I'm almost 100% positive this guy has tenure. Which sucks.

  • he's a visiting professor. I had the knot open but I was looking at him at the moment - he was asking about the world series because he wanted to go off on a tangent about it@ PP that said not to mention that I was browsing the web - the guy had the baseball game up on the corner of his screen while teaching.  He actually turned to the Caucasian guy and asked the guy if he(prof) should set up the game on his(caucasian student) computer Yes I know I was wrong for having something else up while in class. I'm not denying that. What I;m asking is if I;m over thinking what he said and should I just brush it off or is it plain rude.. i just think the language comment, wrong sex, wrong country comment was kinda offensive. he could simply have said I guess you're not a baseball fan
  • That's awful.  I would be mortified.  I would also tell him how condescending and completely inappropriate his comments were.  May even bring it up to the Administration.  This is inexcusable.
